This is just "recognition" though ... Honduras and Venezuela did it like 8 years ago.

this doesn't really mean shit, Russia is not annexing the territory, simply "recognizes" them as independent entities. They are not part of Russia.

The downside is that there was a whole lot of shit-talk from a country with GDP less than NY or TX or CA ... can his ass cash the check his mouth wrote?

no but he will do it anyway.

well once russia recognizes them as independent entities, it then follows that ukraine is currently engaging in illegal occupation and warfare against these independent entities. they might follow up this recognition with an ultimatum along the lines of "you have 72 hours to vacate all territory of the independent entities, otherwise we will step in and drive you out by force"

Seems like Russia is going to bring in troops to assist these "independent states". That will be considered at least a "minor incursion".
When you add in Russia's pledge to never let Ukraine have nuclear weapons, this will be essentially a declaration of war.

The thing is, if Russia pushes in, even with just the tip, the risk of full-scale war quickly approaches 100%. I don't think Ukrainian troops can be trusted to not retaliate even if ordered not to do so.

What is Putin’s Fursona was the question we should have been asking this entire time
A snow leopard. It is known.

Waiting for "call for assistance" from the freshly-baked "independent republics" in 3... 2... 1...

And it won't be his ass cashing the check but ours. Excuse me while I remain mad on the Internet, I didn't vote for him.

At least we can stop the whole argument that Russian regular troops are in Donbas ... yes, they are in Donbas now, officially and Russian military can save some cash scrubbing their old ID marks off armor.

And Minsk agreement ... I guess that's mute point now

So real question what will happen on the border? There has been no conflict that I know of between Ukraine and Crimea, i.e. no shelling, no sniper wars. How will this change?

So at this point, the recognized "republics" may request military aid as first order of business, i.e. Russia may place bases there as well as nukes whatever.

This is my favorite: head of DNR is Denis Pushilin which if you are dislexic could be written as Penis Dushilin ... i.e. dick "chocker" in Russian ... just a bit of humor in otherwise somber times.

That speech sounded very hitler like. Getting 1939 poland vibes.

Ukraine ironically is in an identical position. Surrounded on 3 sides and guarantees for assistance that dont mean much.

Crimea declared independence, then immediately voted to join Russia, which they accepted right away. Something similar is probably going to happen with the breakaways.

First Trudeau with his Emergency Powers grab, now Putin.

Welp, that speech probably just put the kibosh on this thing not lighting up.

It was like throwing an open match into a open gas depo...
