Americans might not realise this, but parliamentary votes are always right along party lines. It's very, very rare to break rank, and generally signals the end of your career in that party. Voting nay if your party wants yea is akin to crossing the floor and joining another party, or sitting as an independent.
The only question was, which way was the NDP going to go.
In addition to matter of party discipline, this was a confidence motion. If the majority of the house expresses no confidence in the government, the government dissolves. We have another election. None of the party machines have paid off the debt from the last one yet.
