The response needs to be more nuanced than this. They need to feel it but going full back then into a corner will have disastrous results since when they face destruction either way the "mutually assured" part starts to look like a positive.while you are right in principle, i do not think that active war is the correct play for america (or europe) at this point.
in my opinion, the correct play would be total economic crackdown and isolation against russia. like, completely seal europes eastern border from estonia to bulgaria, iron curtain style. nobody crosses, no goods, no people, absolutely nothing. close all ports to all russian shipping. further, consider blanket banning all russian IP ranges from all american and european internet infrastructure, like a reverse chinese firewall if you will. then take it one step further, tell all foreign nations that it's a complete "us or them" situation. as in, you either trade with russia, or with usa+europe. if you don't lock them out, we lock you out. basically, complete and utter boycott of the entire russian economy. also freeze and seize any russian assets you can get your hold of.
with all this in place, fortify the borders hard, and wait it out. yes it will hurt your own economy, but it will bring russia to the brink of actual collapse within months.
but, i think that neither the american leadership nor the european leadership has the balls to take drastic measures like this, so what will happen will probably just be thinly veiled appeasement under the guise of minor sanctions, and vlad gets to do as he pleases.
In other news Russia's upper house has (unsurprisingly) voted in favour of deploying troops abroad.

Love the US response there "no you can't call soldiers peace keepers", suprised they could keep a straight face.
And Hungary has decided it might be a good time to move their military to the border.

Its getting set for a tasty all in eastern europe rumble followed by NATO looking very quickly through it's charter for a loophole to leave them to it.
