President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

“Ukrainian issue has its own complicated and unique history,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi tells his Russian counterpart during a telephonic conversation

BEIJING: Beijing on Thursday told Russia’s foreign minister it understands Moscow’s "reasonable concerns on security issues" over Ukraine, according to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry, after President Vladimir Putin ordered an attack on the country.

Putin announced the launch of a major military offensive with ground troops crossing into the country from several directions on Thursday and explosions heard in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.

World leaders swiftly condemned the attack, and 18 people have been killed in an airstrike on a military base near Ukraine’s Black Sea port city of Odessa.

In a phone call between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Russian counterpart, Wang said that although Beijing "has always respected the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries... we have also seen that the Ukrainian issue has its own complicated and unique history".

"We understand Russia´s reasonable concerns on security issues," he added.

Beijing has been walking a diplomatic tightrope as the Ukraine-Russia crisis escalated, forced to balance its close Russia ties with major economic interests in Europe.

Russia has demanded guarantees that Kyiv will never be allowed to join NATO -- and Moscow’s approach is in stark contrast to China’s long-standing stated foreign policy position not to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs.

On Thursday’s call Wang did not mention NATO but told Sergei Lavrov that China advocates a "balanced" and sustainable European security mechanism to be achieved through dialogue and negotiation.

The foreign ministry repeatedly declined to call the attack an "invasion" at a press briefing Thursday and said it was monitoring the situation.

It has not advised its citizens in Ukraine to leave, telling them to be cautious and stick a Chinese flag on their cars.

During the meeting, matters related to bilateral relations, economic cooperation and regional situation will be discussed.

I wish people would stop saying this even in jest, Nuclear conflict even a limited exchange is a fucking horrifying idea, the only thing they have consistently spent money on maintaining is there nuclear assets since the end of the cold war and you would be really shocked to find out that it's not just millitary targets that are programmed into those missiles, a lot of those targets are near by civilian assets that are near large population centers because they can also sustain a military force or cause more damage than a Air Burt nuclear weapon would, you might me 1000 miles from a Air, Army or Navy base and find a nuke dropping on your small village because there is reservoir there.
Yeah, coincidentally, the site would probably be nothing left but Kiwi (NZ) Kiwis if a nuclear hot war broke out between the US and Russia, as everybody would be slinging every nuke they have, and basically al the top 100 urban areas in the US plus hundreds more smaller towns containing critical infrastructure or military bases are getting got, too. If you're within 50 miles of a missile silo you didn't even know about, you aren't surviving. Major airport? Cargo or passenger, doesn't matter, you're gone. Oh, that's a nice power plant you've got: See you in Hell.
Tl;dr - A nuclear hot war would result in your near-immediate death, and whatever wasteland warrior bullshit would follow would result in your slightly less immediate but even more painful death as the mobs descend upon your "armed but polite" society with the state's surviving goons, now turned bandits, in tow, There will be no-one left to help you.

So China is basically saying that will help Russia in the economic fallout

Zelensky says Ukraine troops fighting to prevent repeat of Chernobyl

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday Kyiv’s forces were fighting invading Russian troops for control of the Chernobyl plant, the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster.

“Russian occupying forces are trying to take over the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Our soldiers are giving their lives so that the tragedy of 1986 does not happen again,” he wrote on Twitter, referring to the date of the disaster.

Russia-Ukraine conflict latest: Chernobyl under attack from Kremlin forces, says Kyiv

Russians troops are attempting to seize the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has warned.

"Our defenders are giving their lives so that the tragedy of 1986 will not be repeated," Mr Zelensky tweeted.

"This is a declaration of war against the whole of Europe."

The attack comes as airborne Russian troops captured Antonov international airport on outskirts of Kyiv.

Russia claims it has destroyed "over 70 military targets", including 11 airfields.

Ukraine's armed forces have been ordered to repel the invasion by inflicting "maximum losses" on the enemy, Major General Valeriy Zaluzhn said.

Best possible view of the current military objectives and frontlines available, found on reddit. It shows current restricted airspace. Russian targets inside ukraine are also orange, anything not purple means its fallen to Russia, unless deeper in Ukraine. (probably).

Russia Says Destroyed Over 70 Ukraine Military Targets

Russia’s military said it has destroyed 74 Ukrainian military targets on the first day of its invasion into the pro-Western country Thursday amid conflicting reports over gains and losses inflicted on both sides.

Eleven Ukrainian airfields, three command posts and a naval base have been “put out of operation,” Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a televised briefing.

He said Russia destroyed 18 Ukrainian radar stations of the S-300 and Buk-M1 missile systems in addition to shooting down four Bayraktar TB-2 combat drones and one combat helicopter.

Footage across Ukrainian cities showed widespread missile strikes and artillery shelling from the eastern Ukrainian separatist enclaves to its western regions near European borders. Ukraine has reported dozens of casualties.

Moscow’s Defense Ministry said that 14 Ukrainian soldiers have surrendered and will be released after they sign a renunciation of armed resistance.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, according to Konashenkov, ordered the Russian military to treat the captured troops “with respect” and create a safety corridor for their evacuation.

In the only admission of losses, Konashenkov said a Russian Sukhoi Su-25 attack aircraft crashed due to pilot error and the pilot catapulted to safety.

There was no immediate confirmation of Konashenkov’s figures.

Moscow and Kyiv have been racing to establish control over information in the fog of war.

Earlier in the day, Ukraine’s armed forces denied Russia’s claims of fleeing Ukrainian border guards and seized cities.

And Russia’s federal media regulator has threatened to block outlets that publish information from outside official Russian channels.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine before dawn Thursday, forcing residents to flee for their lives and leaving at least 40 Ukrainian soldiers and 10 civilians dead.

According to the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Russia's armed forces amount to 900,000 troops, plus some 2 million reserves and more than half a million other forces.

Ukraine's forces meanwhile amount to barely more than the number of troops Russia had amassed around its borders, with a standing army of 14,000, 45,000 in the air force and 11,000 in the navy, according to the IISS. It has some 100,000 other forces and 900,000 reserve soldiers.

Dozens of Russian Anti-War Picketers Detained – Reports

Dozens of Russians have been detained in cities across the country for protesting against the war against Ukraine, independent monitors said Thursday.

Solo pickets — essentially the only legal form of public protest in Russia — in protest of the war have taken place from the southern city of Tolyatti to the Far East city of Khabarovsk.

The police-monitoring website OVD-Info has reported nearly 50 detentions in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other Russian cities for staging solo anti-war pickets.

Prominent rights activist Marina Litvinovich on Thursday called on Russians to attend a “walk” against the war at 7 p.m. Moscow time, including on Pushkin Square in central Moscow.

Soon after, authorities detained Litvinovich outside her home, the independent Dozhd broadcaster reported.

Later, several anti-war protesters who had gathered at the Ukrainian Embassy in Moscow were detained.

In Russia's fourth-largest city Yekaterinburg, more than 100 people took part in an anti-war protest, according to the Znak.com news website.

Moscow prosecutors warned that unauthorized gatherings are illegal and will lead to “negative consequences,” and the federal Investigative Committee issued a special warning to “unpermitted” anti-war demonstrators.

The protests are among the many displays of public resistance to the military offensive on Russia’s pro-Western neighbor.

Russian pop culture figures, celebrities, journalists, cultural figures and scientists have all voiced opposition to the war since President Vladimir Putin announced it Thursday morning.

Ukraine's government are litterally Neo-Nazis. Most of the Donbass region identifies as Russian anyways. Half the population will probably welcome Putin with open arms.

This isn't the David vs. Goliath battle many in the media claim it to be. It's just a case of two jerks arguing over territory. I dont like either of them, and couldn't care less.

I think NATO and the US feel the same. Sure, they'll publicly condemn Russia, and enact a few sanctions, but they're not gonna risk WW3 for this.

Henry Kissenger wouldn't want to stop the flow of Northen European mail-order brides.

I'm hoping Russia wins and Europe just becomes a Russian colony, it would be funny. Also hoping that Biden has a fucked up senile moment and instead of sending troops to fight Russia in Ukraine he sends troops that end up capturing Poland preemptively and Poland is conquered once more like it has been in all major European conflicts.
