While they were on track to joining the EU and NATO, their corrupt incompetent government that lead to a literal TV comedian getting elected dragged it's feet for too long, and now Russia is taking back its clay. This isn't like Afghanistan where our long term vassal that had a lot of significance to the USA both domestically and internationally folded in under a month. Yeah, not "the best look" for America, Europe, NATO, and the EU. But all this talk of Putin going on a Third Reich invasion spree or that this all means Taiwan is doomed (not that I rule out a Chinese invasion, its just unlikely given China's situation) is fucking retarded nonsense.

This is a country where the current president was largely elected because he played the President on a TV sitcom for fuck sake. Are you really going to risk the ruin of Europe and possible nuclear oblivion over a country that does that? At least Trump has been President baiting since the 80's.

In an age where world leaders are cowards when push comes to shove, bravery is an exception. If your an enlisted soldier and your commander in chief is not abandoning you at the first sign of trouble, I imagine it can do wonders for morale.
Well most people are really wild cards when it's not a complete shithole. Afghanistan was legendary for generally having people that were untrustworthy, corrupt and a horde of back stabbing Judas'. People are stupid so they naturally compare Iraq and Afghanistan, however Iraqi's have demonstrated that they can field incredibly talented military units and have a strong sense of nationalism with some trust. Afghans were infamous among U.S. army circles for being unreliable and likely to stab you in the back, and most Taliban units sucked at fighting except when they are LARPing Luke Skywalker taking down the big mean Empire.

Ukraine I imagine has something resembling a "you're gonna have to work for it" mentality, but I still think if the option is given to just go home, and return to things as normal most will take it.

what an idiot... the Polish are more than willing to defend themself and they have enough money to buy the good stuff from germany.
modern Anti Aircraft guns, the best Tanks, PzH 2000, IFVs, Superior small arms, etc. Germany also has the Industry to produce that stuff in a short time, unlike Russia.
I'm sure the Germans would also not be thrilled with the idea of Russia being anywhere near it again. May even cut the poles a deal.

The VDV continues the proud tradition of airborne forces getting slaughtered in botched operations.
If that's an accurate report, then that seems to indicate that the window for airborne linkups has gotten a lot shorter since 1945. That was, what, 12 hours they lasted? Either the Russians vastly overestimated how long VDV could hold out, or the ground plan is going spectacularly worse than expected.

The Allies left their elite paratroopers to die in Arnhem during Market Garden because shit happened. Shit happens in war. You take risks, sometimes they work, sometimes it's a fuckin disaster
Using paratroopers for operations its usually a gamble that is high risk, high reward. A defeat at the airport is a blow to the Russians for sure because the VDV are supposed to be elite troops.

I feel like this is a little dishonest that we're pretending the Budapest Memorandum didn't happen because Putin decided it doesn't count any more.
