President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

You are certifiably insane if you think the US, NATO at large, and anyone else holding Poland accountable is going to allow WW3 to happen because some dumbasses with unpronounceable names decided they "weren't going to tolerate a direct border with Moscow".

They will tolerate whatever the fuck they're told to tolerate. They have the backing of NATO so nobody is going to be steamrolling them. Them going out into foreign territory and trying to pick fights with another country in direct combat is absolute madness.
War is madness, and yet here we are.

Of course I don't support Russia, but would you blame em?

Later in the war LOL. This will be over in a couple of weeks at most.

Ukraine is not going to be able to deal with this kind of firepower.

Yeah, sorry, I meant to say "could have" as a hypothetical if UKR had managed to not get insta-rolled. UKR wouldn't have been able to muster out assaults, but they could have stashed damaged tanks until they could get fixed and they'd have been untouchable for the duration due to the threat of the sealed reactor.

Please God, I need a CRINGE rating.

Muh "wounded bird" & "scurred little boy" narrative, Putin is not a frightened child throwing his toys in an emotional tantrum, he's a cold & calculated ex-KGB totalitarian, the guy was a party to one of the worst regimes in the world and was cutthroat enough to rise to the top after the USSR officially fell.

I know squat about Putin and I'm less out of touch than these people.

Greetings from Poland.

The entire fucking liberal west is responsible for this shit show. It's been going on since 1989 when the iron curtain fell down and Poland, Czechia and Hungary immediately joined NATO followed by other EE countries in years to come.

Apparently Putin was promised in the 90s there would be no NATO and EU expansion further to the East. But then there was Georgia, now Ukraine. Occupied countries can't joined the EU (and I think NATO as well).

That fat hobgoblin Merkel knew about it and even stated years ago that inviting Ukraine to join NATO would only piss Russia off but then decided not to do anything about it.

Of course Russia doesn't want to be surrounded by capitalist western democratic military alliance with NATO troops having a daily cookout by their borders.

I've also heard Canada is planning to send their military support to Poland which made me laugh out loud, can't wait for your army of troons to come and help us fight the Ruskies, thank you Miss Trudeau.

I feel like Putin is using Muh Nazis rhetoric as a way of shitting on western media and their glorification of Antifa. I could be wrong but if I'm right that's hilarious.

Technically he's right, there is an arm of the Ukraine Army that are Neo-Nazis

U wot m8? After Vienna in 1683 things immediately starting going downhill for the Ottomans. 1699 saw them hand Hungary over to the HRE, the first major loss of territory ever since their first invasion of Europe centuries prior, territory they would never again possess.

While they were able to hold their own against an Austria increasingly facing threats to its West, by the end of the 1700's Russia had begun forcing them from the Balkans and the Treaty of Kuchuk-Kainarji in 1774 placed the Orthodox subjects of the Ottomans under Russian protection, the first time the Ottomans had to abdicate authority over any of their peoples.
Northern Balkans had been going back and forth between the Ottomans and Austrians for decades by that point (and then Russia also joined in). The only battle of Vienna that actually had an effect on Ottoman expansion was the one in the 1500s. The 1683 one was literally just an ego trip launched by some retarded military commander. Poland loves to pat themselves on the back over 1683 like it was some massive turning point, just like they like to pat themselves on the back against Russia and Germany and Sweden.

Russian warship hails the Ukrainian defenders of Snake Island, orders them to lay down their arms. Ukrainian reply, "Russian warship, go fuck yourself."

The President of Ukraine confirms the defenders were killed to the last man, vows that they will be remembered as heroes (He is giving an address live right now https://nitter.net/Caucasuswar/status/1496981935226339330#m)

According to the U.K. Ministry of Defense, Russia is literally burning their men's bodies as they go

This seems to directly contradict with a post on the front page of Reddit today from the sub "tankporn" which allegedly showed a destroyed Russian tank and dead soldier beside it. Body wasnt definitley burned.

Anyways, i have no idea of its real or not, as anything can be faked. But heres the link anyways.

Who cares about the 90s.

War is now. What are you going to do about it other than watch from across the fence?

Right, I'm sure that if this had occurred a few years ago the Trump White House would have offered a really vigorous and well-coordinated response.
Except it didn't happen retard. You are missing the point. We didn't even need to worry about this when Trump was president, not even needing to get to the point of a Trump administration response.

"This Trump would have been worse in theory!!!" narrative is some of the lamest attacks on Trump I have ever seen, and that's saying something after the years of stupid attacks I've seen.

I wonder though how much of it was inherent unsustainability in the Ottoman government that doomed it in the long-run.

After all, wasn't their revenue system based on the solar year, yet their spending system based on the lunar year- one effect of which resulted in structural budgetary issues down the road, especially once the conquests were halted?

Reports that Russian artillery has damaged nuclear waste containment facilities near the Chernobyl reactor, causing a rise in local radiation levels. Remains unconfirmed.
