That assumption pretty mush shoots to shit Russia's stated reason for kicking this off though. Then again you have to be pretty far up your own ass to take what Putin says at face value.

It's difficult teasing out what his real intentions are here and how far this is going to go.

Exactly, it's more depressing to see people posting ukraine flags on facebook and writing "prayers for the people of ukraine, for a diplomatic end to war" because that shit doesn't even work when you are dealing with cops or politicians in america. It all just seems so futile.

I suspect he's old and he wants to fulfil the Eurasianist dream of "gathering in the lands" and reuniting the three Rus nations (under the loving hand of himself of course) and he's doing it now because Russia is strong enough, and the west is generally weak and dependant on Russian exports with a pipsqueak French president, a potato as the german chancellor and the American president particularly weak with 30% popular support
