I think what they want to do is to get forces on both the north and south side of Kyiv before they attempt to take the city. Taking Oddessa wouldn't really help much with that. Likewise, it would bring them closer to at least semi-neutral nations' borders which would create a risk since Ukraine is desperately trying to suck more nations into this war already.
The end result of those countries joining is the expansion of NATO though, which is what we want because we want ypur resources. I’m not believing Russain lies I’m saying this was always going to happen and at no point could Russia have stopped this short of never being the USSR in the first place.
