It’s difficult, you look like a lunatic when you say the people being nice are going to lead to your ruin and are not to be trusted and then by the time you have no choice but to respond you have to respond hard. Russia was essentially trapped.

How was Russia trapped? Nobody is being nice. Countries want to be sovereign and Russia does not want them to be sovereign, historically proven, so the countries most worried about Russia invasion join NATO. How is this hard to comprehend? Other countries are acting on their own accord. Russia should have no say in it, other than diplomacy with those countries. They didn't want diplomacy and wanted to say what these countries can and can't do, so it's war.
If US promised them something and did not deliver, then they should ask US for an explanation, don't just invade a random country.

Responding to a hypothetical with, "That didn't actually happen," is not a rebuttal.

But the Russian threat of invasion, proven from history, is the reason for these countries to join, how do you not understand this? Ukrain did not join NATO and look at what is happening there! This would have happened even sooner to Baltic States and Poland if they would not have joined NATO, and there is a real likelihood that it will happen anyway, even with them joining NATO, since nobody knows if NATO will actually even honor the alliance.
