Dont get why you would be smug about a country being forced to use alternatives to the corrupt global financial system, but this could be trouble in the future. If Russia makes a competing system to SWIFT then the entire (current) global financial system just got in trouble, because now there is an alternative for everyone who cant/does not want to use SWIFT. This would make "Banning someone from SWIFT" an order of magnitude less effective as a threat/sanction, including for Russia itself that now also gets to control the competitor to Swift.
Its not exactly unrealistic to assume that China and Russia could work together on such an alternative financial system.

That would be "bad" to put it carefully for the US and fellow western banking Globohomo in general. Its short term effective,
but its not the Russia "own" you think it is long-medium term.
Not that any of this would be bad imo, Globohomos Financial system is kinda fucked anyways if you have not noticed prices for everything constantly increasing.
Its just that that would qualify as a realistic Western, including American and European SHTF scenario depending on how badly our western-led global financial system would react to real competition from Chink-o-rubels .

Right or wrong, Russia has an interest in not letting the USA have a staging ground for military action right on his border.

Recall that the USA is a country which has invaded Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, all of which are countries that do not border the United States and which have no substantial US population. Ukraine at least has actual ethnic Russians who speak Russian there. Obviously this is part of the great game of chess that all world powers play, but it's lunacy for representatives of the USA to try to convince me, the tax payer, that my money should pay to kill people in another country because I'm supposed to believe this week's Voldemort-Hitler is carrying out his own USSR flavored invasion of Poland.

The Russians concerns about Ukraine joining NATO were legitimate and their concerns about US intentions are also valid. But
having those problems doesn't make what Putin did a good solution.

Imposing a government by force or Ukraine doesn't change things. It just resets the clock on the problem. Because Russia is
going to sustain any government it imposes on Ukraine by a combination of force and money. And sooner or later the
will to maintain the situation will go away. Ukraine will re-gain its independence and Russia will be faced with exactly
the same problems again.

The best outcome for everyone in the situation would have been an informal agreement to kick the can down the road
again on Ukraine joining the EU or NATO.
