This has been low-quality conscripts, russian-backed separatists, and PMCs meant to test mettle and grind down the defenders. I 100% guarantee you that there are "normal" (for a slav) Ukranian people that would do that without being either crazy (by eastern european standards) or facist. Or an assasin for that matter.

The sheer act of surrendering to the same guys that did the holomolodomor is a valid act of treachery in the eyes of many a Ukranian i can assure you.
The path to peace is (as usually in slav-land) blocked by ancient slav blood-feuds that are older than anyone alive in either country.
