That's exactly the problem - they should have went full frontal on the eve of day 2 or 3. None of this "limit civilian casualties" bullshit - just wipe them out as quickly as possible, level a city or two while you're at it.

That's what the Ukrainian government wanted though, they wanted piles of civilian bodies and burning rubble where cities used to be to bring in western military assistance through claims of genocide and such. That's the reason they openly and loudly announced arming civilians against Russia, make every one of them a prospective target but somehow the ones that do get killed will be the unarmed elderly women and kids.

Russia is denying them the optics they really want to put front and center by avoiding civilians, hell we have videos of tanks stopping because a civilian is blocking them rather than just going for it. They're even using their slower progress and lack of collateral as a propaganda piece including throwing some shade at America for Iraq/Afghanistan.

I'd imagine whenever they have physical control of the important people or the important people have left then they will claim victory and begin enforcing the new borders. At that point it's on 3rd parties to decide as Russia isn't going to care about guerilla warfare.
