President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

One Putin move and behold: West's unity tightens overnight

Russian President Vladimir Putin has achieved in days what remained out of the grasp of the European Union for many years and decades

Within days, Russian President Vladimir Putin has achieved what remained out of the grasp of the European Union for many decades — to jointly buy and send weapons to a war zone — and restored something that was broken for years — trans-Atlantic unity.

For years, Putin could sit back and relish in unseemly scenes of Western disunity — ranging from the Britain's Brexit move out of the EU in 2016, Hungary's long-standing antipathy towards its EU headquarters and, equally, the rift created by former President Donald Trump that has far from fully healed under Joe Biden.

For Putin, the timing seemed perfect for his invasion of Ukraine since it had the potential of opening the cracks of division even further, with a war on the continent forcing everyone far outside their diplomatic comfort zone.

“And just as Vladimir Putin thought that he would destroy European unity, exactly the opposite thing has happened,” European Council President Charles Michel said in an interview with a small group of reporters on Monday.

“Cooperation is solid as a rock,” he said. “This is demanded by the circumstances of history. Demanded by circumstances that none of us could have imagined,” Michel added.

On Monday, Biden was leading another videoconference with EU, Britain and other Western leaders to solidify a common package of sanctions that are unprecedented in scope and unity. Over the weekend, Brussels and Washington announced financial sanctions within minutes of each other, all targeting the central bank and cutting Russia out of much of the SWIFT international financial transaction system.

Together they closed their airspace to Russian planes, agreed on lists of Russian oligarchs to hit. Seeing the West gel together instead of break apart, Putin on Monday went to the old lingo that the West loved to use itself in the Cold War days of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact.

Centering his wrath on Washington, he described Western allies as U.S. “satellites which humbly fawn on it, kowtow to it, copy its conduct and joyfully accept the rules it offers to follow.”

“So it’s fair to say that the entire Western bloc formed by the U.S. to its liking represents an empire of lies,” Putin said.

Western powers will take such unity as a compliment these days, and it was unheard of before Putin started massing troops on Ukraine's border.

Especially, the stance within the 27-nation EU is a sea change that was achieved within a few ebbs and flows.

“This is a watershed moment,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in the wake of Sunday's decision for the EU “to finance the purchase and delivery of weapons and other equipment to a country that is under attack.”

This is the same European Union based on a post-World War II peace project that would only turn swords into plowshares to recreate a welfare continent of unprecedented riches. It was that same European Union that received the Nobel Peace Prize 10 years ago for what it could achieve without the use of weapons.

It was also the same bloc that for years has vaunted the value of what it calls soft power — diplomacy, aid, cultural exchanges — instead of the raw power that comes through the barrel of a gun.

All this change in barely a week. Now, Michel says: “There is no space for weakness and we need to show a firmness.”

Nowhere has the change been more pronounced than in Germany, the EU’s leading economic power but also a country that has been reluctant to invest heavily in military power, in large part because of its militaristic past which resulted in the horror of World War II.

Germany has faced persistent criticism over recent years for failing to meet a NATO target of spending 2% of gross domestic product on defense. On Sunday, though, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that Germany would commit 100 billion euros ($113 billion) to a special fund for its armed forces and raise defense spending above 2% “from now on, year for year.”

Scholz also has done an about-face on Germany’s refusal to export weapons to conflict zones, pledging to send anti-tank weapons and surface-to-air missiles to Ukraine.

“If our world is different, then our policy must be different as well,” Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said. The policy U-turn was executed by a government led by center-left Social Democrats sometimes criticized as being soft on Russia and a Green party that has a pacifist heritage

That world changed as well for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban — often seen as the EU's version of an autocrat leader much like Putin is. For years, he has been railing against the EU as meddlesome, was friends with Putin and was seen as someone who could break the bloc from within.

Especially since EU sanctions against Russia require unanimity among all 27, the moment beckoned. Still Hungary, fell in line as much as the others when it came to sanctions — within days.

“I spoke immediately with Viktor Orban when we faced this new situation and I can tell you, it was less difficult than expected to have the support of Hungary," Michel said.

It might still be early days in the war though and tougher moments might lie ahead with even bigger decisions to make, especially since Putin and his circle have had time for many years to prepare for any eventuality.

“They do have the ability to keep going for some time despite the pain,” said Amanda Paul of the European Policy Center think tank. “So it means that the West will need to be very committed and very determined to keep pushing and pushing.”

Ukrainian fighters grease bullets against Chechens with pig fat

Ukraine's Western-backed National Guard has praised its Nazis fighters for greasing bullets with lard to kill Russian Muslims. The official, verified Twitter account of the Ukrainian National Guard tweeted a video on February 27 showing a soldier from the neo-Nazi Azov movement dipping bullets in pig fat. In Islam, pork and other pig products are seen as haram, to say unclean and forbidden.

Azov Batallion is like /pol/ zoomers were given guns and opportunity to realize their meme fantasies but I have to admit it's fucking hilarious considering the kind of fuckers they're using it against.

I don't really get what the fuck was Putin expecting? That Merica and globo homo just sits there and watches how he ends the current world order?

You have to tell me that he expected the extreme sanctions from the West and comes up with some ultimate 4d chess move soon, to counter that. Otherwise Jesus...he destroyed everything he build up from the complete fuckery that Russia was in the 90s. He would be even worser then freaking Yeltsin lol

Russia–Ukraine Ceasefire Talks End With No Agreement

Negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian officials in a third country on Feb. 28 yielded no results, officials said after the talks concluded.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sent top officials as intermediaries as Russian and Ukrainian forces continued battling in Ukraine, including near major cities such as Kyiv. The negotiations were held in Belarus, which has allowed Russian forces to pass through during the war.

Mykhailo Podolyak, a top adviser to Zelensky, told reporters after talks broke off that the primary aim was to discuss a ceasefire.

“The parties have determined several priority topics on which certain decisions have been envisioned,” Podolyak said. “The parties are returning to their capitals to have the possibility to implement these decisions. The parties have discussed the possibility to hold in the nearest time a second round of negotiations where these issues will get to be practically developed.”

Podolyak later took to Twitter, writing: “Negotiations are difficult. However, without any obligatory ultimatums already. Unfortunately, the Russian side is still extremely biased regarding the destructive processes it launched.”

Vladimir Medinsky, who headed the Russian delegation, said the five-hour talks included finding points of agreement on unspecified various agenda items and featured an agreement to continue negotiations.

“The next meeting will take place in the coming days at the Polish–Belarusian border. There is already a relevant agreement. Before the meeting, both delegations, the leaders of both delegations, will consult with their countries’ leadership concerning their negotiation positions,” Medinsky said.

In Washington, Ned Price, a spokesman for the U.S. State Department, said the United States supports Ukraine attempting to reach a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, but said it would be difficult to hammer out a pact while fighting was ongoing.

Russian troops, on Putin’s orders, entered Ukraine on Feb. 24 and have moved toward Kyiv in the intervening days.

Fighting has taken place around Kyiv, Kharkiv, and other major cities.

As the negotiations took place, other officials appeared at the United Nations in New York.

Sergiy Kyslytsya, the Ukrainian ambassador to the U.N., told the assembled representatives that the U.N.’s General Assembly “should be vocal in demanding from the Russian Federation to stop its offensive against Ukraine as an act of aggression against a sovereign and independent state.”

The assembly should demand Russia immediately and unconditionally withdraw its troops from Ukraine and reverse the recognition of portions of eastern Ukraine as independent, he said, as well as recognizing “the treacherous role of Belarus” in the conflict.

Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s ambassador to the U.N., later said the crisis was precipitated by the actions of Ukraine, including flouting obligations under the Minsk agreement reached in 2014.

“Our Western colleagues have shamelessly inundated the country with weapons, have sent to the country instructors and effectively incited Ukrainians, who are facing a 120,000 strong military contingent, and prompted them to engage in armed provocation against the Donbas,” he said, referring to one of the regions, adding that Russia’s army “does not pose a threat to the civilians of Ukraine, is not shelling civilian areas and areas and cities where Russian armed forces have taken control, and these areas are seeing citizens living their lives normally.”

This is floating around. It is apparently an official picture of Putin in a meeting with Senior advisors this morning or yesterday. And supposedly it's not fake. The internet is already gloriously Mem'ing it. But it's hard to top what it actually is.

Does he have to scream to talk to them? Biden and Putin should hang out together in the cuckshed.

The only news I trust on this war are the actual on the ground combat videos. I know a lot of the videos fighting against Ukraine is being censored but, they’re Ukrainians. You expect them to fight poorly. Russia held the world hostage to accept communism on threat of thermonuclear annihilation for 40 years. They’re making embarrassingly amateur mistakes. Doing things even the Iraqis learned to not do. And if there were videos of Iraqi peasants joyriding in Abrams tanks less than a week into the invasion, they’d be still talking about it today.

If you fight a war this badly after initiating it, you deserve to lose.

I don't really get what the fuck was Putin expecting? That Merica and globo homo just sits there and watches how he ends the current world order?
That seems to be exactly what he was expecting. Fucking guy didn’t even top off his mobile armor divisions fuel tanks. “Just put them in park when you reach the capital, comrades”.

I think that is exactly what he expected. And when it came to the response and how Biden handled it, it was exactly what America ended up doing.

What he did not expect was that Europe would quickly unite and also put real hard sanctions on russia as well as shipping weapons to the Ukranians.

European Union usually needs years to negotiate and discuss things before they can decide anything. This in combination with the material effects on Europe if the energy shipments from russia ceased is likely why he throught Europe would have folded and done nothing.
I also thought Europe would do nothing and am ready to eat hat.
Is this a moment of Europe finally starting to be able to take swift action and show unity on the world stage? Maybe Europe is what will replace US as the beaacon and the protector of western ideals against China and Russia going forward now as US seems to be in decline?

EDITED TO ADD:
I think what he expected was:
1, US/Biden is weak and will basically do nothing except some speeches
2, Ukraine will quickly fold against the mighty red army
3, Europe is very dependent on Russian energy and also suffers from "Polish Government" so they will also do nothing.

He got 1 right and 2 and 3 wrong. That is a major miscalculation.

Ukraine actually does pose a threat to Russia. The geography of Central and Eastern Europe is dominated by the European Plane which in and of itself is flat, indefensible land. By the time it reaches Ukraine and Russia, the European Plain expands to a staggering length of several thousand kilometres. Due East of Ukraine is the Volgograd Gap which Germany tried to exploit twice in both World Wars because cutting off the Volgograd Gap from Russian control means that the Russian heartland gets cut off from their gas reserves in the Caspian Sea along with their holdings in the Caucasus. Russian geography in the post-Soviet world is cursed beyond all belief because the Russian heartland exists on flat, indefensible land. The reason why the Russian Empire and the later USSR spanned such a great distance is specifically because of the interests of Russia itself.

If Ukraine ever joins NATO, the Volgograd Gap and thus, the very means of Russian survival in the first place gets put into jeopardy. It would’ve been better off as a neutral buffer state, but Putin has shown us all that he’s not willing to play ball with any nation that isn’t squarely within the firm grasp of the Kremlin.
For the 1000th time, no one wants to invade fucking Russia. Maybe the Chinks do, but not the West. We can everything we need from them by buying it at a normal, competitive price, just like any other country.

Edit: I double responded by accident. I fixed it

Russia will continue to ensure realization of its national interests despite sanctions, foreign ministry says

In a statement Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry lashed out against the EU's plans to provide arms to Ukraine, adding that Russia will continue to ensure the realization of its national interests despite sanctions.

“EU citizens and structures involved in supplying lethal weapons and fuel and lubricants to the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be responsible for any consequences of such actions in the context of the ongoing special military operation. They cannot fail to understand the degree of danger of the consequences,” the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement read.
The statement went on to diminish Western sanctions, saying that Russia will continue to ensure the realization of its national interest.

“Another myth that had been propagated by the EU in the past — that their unilateral restrictions, which are illegitimate under international law, are not directed against the Russian people — has been finally dispelled. Brussels functionaries, who until recently portrayed themselves as our country's ‘strategic partner’, are not hiding any longer: they intend to inflict maximum damage on Russia, hit its weak points, seriously destroy its economy and suppress its economic growth,” the statement read.

The statement continued: “We want to assure you it will not. The actions of the European Union will not go unanswered. Russia will continue to ensure the realization of its vital national interests without regard to sanctions and their threats. It is time for Western countries to understand that their undivided dominance in the global economy is long a thing of the past."

Missile strike in Kyiv region destroys dormitory and residential buildings, Ukrainian official says

A missile strike earlier today on Vasylkiv, Bila Tserkva and Kalinovka in the Kyiv region destroyed a five-story dormitory and two five-story residential buildings, Ukraine’s Ministry of Interior said.
Three state emergency service units are on their way to provide assistance to the dormitory that was hit in Bila Tserkva.
Emergency service units are not en route to the two five-story residential buildings in Vasylkiv and Kalinovka because the shelling is ongoing.

International Criminal Court opens investigation into Russian invasion of Ukraine

The International Criminal Court in the Hague, Netherlands, will open an investigation into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as “rapidly as possible,” ICC Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan said in a statement Monday.

Following a preliminary examination into the situation, Khan said he confirmed that there is a reasonable basis to “believe that both alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity have been committed in Ukraine.”

UK communications regulator launches 15 investigations into Kremlin-backed news channel

The UK's communication regulator is launching 15 investigations into Russia Today (RT), the Kremlin-backed news channel.

The announcement same Monday via a statement.

Ofcom — the UK's communications regulator — said it had "observed a significant increase in the number of programs on the RT service that warrant investigation under our Broadcasting Code."

Last week, UK Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries asked Ofcom to review RT's operation in Britain. The regulator replied to Dorries saying it had “stepped up our oversight" in light of the "serious nature of the crisis in Ukraine."

The investigations "relate to 15 editions of the hourly News program broadcast on RT on 27 February 2022 between 05:00 and 19:00 inclusive" and will be – "expedited, given the severity and urgency of the current crisis," Ofcom said Monday.

Ofcom's Chief Executive Melanie Dawes added that "given the serious, ongoing situation in Ukraine, we will be concluding our investigations into RT as a matter of urgency."

The regulator acknowledged that "when reporting on an armed conflict" it can be "difficult for broadcasters to verify information and events" but that it is "imperative that they make every effort to do so."

US has asked 12 Russian UN diplomats to leave the country, Deputy Ambassador confirms

The United States has asked 12 Russian United Nations diplomats to leave the country due to their alleged engagement in “activities that were not in accordance with their responsibilities and obligations as diplomats,” Ambassador Richard Mills, Deputy Representative of the United States to the United Nations, said during a UN Security Council meeting Monday afternoon.

Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia responded by saying Mills’ explanation of the expulsions was “not satisfactory.”

The US Mission to the UN also said in a statement that the 12 Russian diplomats were “intelligence operatives…who have abused their privileges of residency in the U.S. by engaging in espionage activities that are adverse to our national security.”

“We are taking this action in accordance with the headquarters agreement. Today’s action has been in the works for several months,” US Mission spokesperson Olivia Dalton said.

Nebenzia first announced the news of the expulsions during an earlier press briefing at the UN Monday afternoon. He said he did not know which 12 diplomats were among those asked to leave, but said US officials visited the Russian Mission to the UN and delivered a letter demanding that they leave the country by next Monday, March 7.

“I’ve just received information that the US authorities have undertaken another hostile action against the Russian Mission to the United Nations grossly violating their commitments on the host country agreement that they undertook,” Nebenzia told reporters. “They just visited the Russian Mission and gave us a note prescribing us to do what they demand.”

Why do you think he got 2 wrong? He's winning.

Even seemingly little things like the Ukrainians telling the Russians to go fuck themselves before getting blown up turned out to be a total lie, I don't know if I even trust that Russia hasn't already overtaken Kyiv yet at this point.

Oh if the Ruskies had Kiev you'd know, they'd make a big show of taking down the Ukrainian flag and hoisting the Russian flag like they did in that famous photo of the Soviet soldier hanging the USSR flag over the Reichstag in 1945.

Netflix Declines to Carry Russian Propaganda Channels

Netflix won’t carry the 20 Russian free-to-air propaganda channels that they could be required to host under Russian law.

In December 2021, Netflix was added by the Russian regulator, Roskomnadzor, to its register for audiovisual services because the SVOD reached over 100,000 subscribers. Consequently, Netflix is theoretically required as part of a law — known locally as the Vitrina TV law — to distribute 20 “must-carry” free-to-air Russian news, sports and entertainment TV channels.

The channels include Channel One, NTV and Spa, a channel operated by the Russian Orthodox Church. Channel One is understood to be aligned with the Kremlin and likely to broadcast Putin propaganda, Variety understands.

“Given the current situation, we have no plans to add these channels to our service,” a Netflix spokesperson told Variety.

The law is not yet fully implemented, despite speculation that it would be enforced on March 1. Variety has reached out to Netflix to ask what the streamer’s actions would be should it become law.

While the regulation applies to all audiovisual services over a certain size available in Russia, as of now, Netflix is the only international player on the register. HBO Max is showing its content through the local player Amediateka, and Apple TV Plus and others have yet to be added.

Currently, Netflix continues to offer its service to Russian members while monitoring the situation closely.

Netflix localized in Russia just over a year ago with a Russian-language user interface and local payments. The streamer’s business there is small, with no offices or Netflix employees. In 2021, Netflix greenlit “Anna K,” a contemporary retelling of Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel “Anna Karenina,” as their first Russian original drama series.

So when do we post about the WEF and how this is all an excuse to control everything more?
With the kind of money flying around right now, obviously somebody is going to make an ungodly fortune off this. We'll say we knew it was them behind this all along.

My bet? Those fat cats with Big Sunflower Oil and Gypsie Scrap metal industries.
