The (white nationalist, neo Nazi) Azov regiments became part of Ukraine's military after 2014 and have gained a great deal of control over it. They have had it out for the ethnic Russians in the regions contested in this conflict. Which is why Russia listed "denazification" as one of its goals. The Azovs consider Russians to be Communists and want them destroyed. So that colors in some of the detail of this conflict that is sorely and I would say intentionally lacking.
