Over in the Ukraine megathread, the consensus is Putin is panicking and escalating the conflict. Since Russia doesn't have the resources to sustain a long campaign or even have the logistics to function right, maintaining arms will actually cost them more in the long run, which results in a use it or lose it attitude. It's hard to tell if that reasoning also applies to nukes, but IMO, mounting more pressure on Putin is going to make him more erratic, not less. Are the oligarchs considering assassination? That depends on whether they'll be able to lift sanctions off their bank accounts if they do so. I've heard no guarantees of that, so they have to weigh whether supporting Putin is what will keep the country from turning into Slav Iraq or Libya or bring Putin's head for the West's grace. I'm leaning toward collapse of the Russian government and destabilizing the region based on how the US has run its foreign policy for the last 20 years; virtue signal that we got rid of some dictator, occupy or let allies occupy the area, and then it falls into mismanagement until we impose a government in our favor (see Arab Spring).

So basically, we’re getting decades old conflict finally being boiled and thrown in someone’s face. And the new Cold War will be a civil one.

The reason the Thunderdome forums were hidden to the public is because it fucked with the site's SEO. Search engines don't like websites that lift content wholesale from others, which is basically what every thread OP in the A&N board starts with. That had the effect of tanking the farms' search rankings, so Null restricted the boards to members only so that web crawlers wouldn't find the reposted content and penalize the farms as a whole.

We're not there just yet since Russia isn't exactly getting much support abroad although I think it's safe to say, Russia will be treated as a pariah so long as Putin is around.

Yep. Relations between the USSR and the USA were arguably more open and normal than they are now.
