Ukraine is totally fine and here's why.
>Ghost of Kyiv kills 600 gorrillion Russian jets.
>President Jew Comedian was totally touring the front lines and wasn't using recycled photos from last year.
>Those 13 soldiers on Snake Island died as heroes and definitely didn't surrender to Russian forces.
>All males aged between 18-60 aren't allowed to leave the country.
>Free weapons for citizens.
>Free weapons for citizens totally didn't cause a rise in looting, warfare between gangs and acts of friendly fire on suspected saboteurs.
>Kiev is not surrounded, despite everyone saying it has been.
>Russian forces from Crimea aren't about to link up with forces from Donbass and encircle the Ukrainian forces there.
>Open calls for more foreign military aid.
>Open calls for a volunteer foreign legion of fighters from other countries.
>Open calls for your citizens to make molotov cocktails.
>Serious discussion about using child soldiers.
>Releasing prisoners to help fight, including rapists and murderers.
>Russian air superiority over Ukraine has not been declared, even though it has.
>Ukrainian navy and air force is totes okay and not completely wiped out.
>Every blue checkmark, progressive and neocon is screaming for NATO and the US to get involved.

I'm no Russophile, if anything I'm more sympathetic to Ukraine for it's right to exist and self-determination, but if your country is engaged in much of the above you're pretty much screwed.

The usage of nukes is not restricted by any official treaty. Rather, it's restricted by a very, very basic idea.

"Any entity who uses nukes in an offensive war will be absolutely ruined economically and become a political pariah". They'd be ousted entirely from the political community, cut off from financial resources, and this would be universal. Not even tyrannical states like China would really want anything to do with them. At least not officially.


So the closer these restrictions get to being that status already....

Partially a matter of more recent history. When you look back, the "Ukrainian Revolution" - or whatever the fuck wikipedia's calling it these days - took place roughly February 18–23 2014. With then president Yanukovych fleeing to Russia ahead of impeachment on the 21st. So maybe 3-4 days to oust the president, and barely a week for the transition of power to be under way. A day later, Putin was talking about returning Crimea to Russia and on the 27th Russian troops took in control of the region virtually unopposed and overseeing a referendum of dubious legality which of course was "wildly" in Russia's favor. So 3-4 days for the president to be ousted, and a day for Russia to militarily secure a fairly large and important chunk of the country with no real opposition.

So people couldn't help but expect something of a repeat. The president ousted in days as soon as he's at real risk, and lack of substantial resistance from a disorganized country. That's compounded by Afghanistan, where Kabul fell in a day without any major resistance given a Taliban victory was more or less inevitable. So given that a Russian victory in an unsupported Ukraine should be inevitable, people kind of expected more of the same. Especially as plenty of people expected no one to move to provide meaningful support to Ukraine in time to have a prayer of making a difference.

Even Russia seems to have expect something like this given that on February 27th RIA Novosti's website accidentally published an article praising Putin that treated Ukraine as already back under Russian control, with a particular mention of Kiev. Sure it could be a contingency article accidentally published, but I think most people would agree that it's suspicious that of all articles they could have accidentally published a few days into the war, it would be one that would only make sense if Russian troops had rolled into Kiev unopposed instead of getting there and stalling in the face of resistance.

In short, people really didn't expect Ukraine to be making a real fight of it. Nor for its government to stay defiant instead of cutting and running to ensure their own personal safety. Especially given how outmatched people expected Ukraine's military to be compared to Russia's military.
