What does the sign on the left say?
What is the current take among the "common" Russian people concerning this whole debacle in Ukraine?
"Abroad" to the left, "Homeland" to the right. The opinions vary: myself, all of my friends, all of my acquaintances and all of my colleagues - literally everybody I know with a single exception - are sad, shocked, disgusted and deeply ashamed. The boomers support the war, though, and sincerely believe Ukraineans are vile nazis who are shelling themselves to make Russians look bad, were killing the Russian people in Donbass for years, and deserve to be liberated by courageous heroes who use magic rockets that would never-ever hurt an innocent person who is not a Nazi. I wish I was exaggerating.
And of course, everybody is preparing for absolute financial misery, shifting money into so-far-unsanctioned banks or cashing out. On the first day of war people stormed both jewelry and tech stores to empty the shelves before their savings evaporate just like they did in 2014 and 1991. A few days ago the ATM in the nearest mall had a 60+ people queue, with those depositing being allowed to skip so that the ones ahead could withdraw.
The muslim labor migrants (tajiks, uzbeks, etc.) who do most of construction and janitorial stuff here are leaving in droves, "while they still can" as they say. Yesterday Putin banned all outgoing money transfers abroad, which means they can no longer send their salaries to their families. It also means nobody can pay for Spotify, lol.
Overall, the mood is grim. Which is a jarring contrast with absolutely beautiful spring weather outside, as clear and bright as a Disney movie.
