I'm somewhat surprised Ukraine didn't try to retreat from Mariupol yesterday. It's in a REALLY bad position, and it's not really hard to see why.

For context, yesterday neither Russia nor the DPR were all that close to getting an encirclement.
There might be a "NOT A STEP BACK" directive in effect among the Ukie forces, especially with the insane news yesterday of them mining their own town.

Like Stalin, they'll find out why that's such a bad idea. Unlike Stalin, they don't have the luxury of bringing up more cannon fodder to throw into the meatgrinder.

Fuckin baffles me that we sent them Missile launchers but not M4s. Aks are ass compared to M4s, and the M4 is far more accurate.
I'm guessing there isn't much 5.56 in the country, when the whole place is swimming in 7.62 / 5.45 with a populace who all already know how to use them. Plus swapping one rifle for a better rifle is going to be marginal on benefits versus missiles which can take out things a rifleman could never hope to.

AKs are what the Eastern bloc are used to. There's also the issue of needing compatible ammuniton.

Ian McCollum had said this is fuddlore. The reason AKs have a reputation for being janky is because millions of them around the world have never been properly maintained, since militias and irregulars use them so often. For example, floppies in the Rhodesian Bush War would place the sights all the way up because they thought it made the guns shoot harder.

By contrast, the AR platform is better maintained more often, due to being prominently used by professional militaries and LE, and therefore has a reputation for being more accurate.

A properly maintained AK is comparable to an AR. I am saying this as an AR guy.

I mean, the keyword there was sending them lol

The Ukraine military and Russian military both use 5.45 and there's probably a hundred million rounds of it in Ukraine alone. Zero reason to switch at this point in time

You can send a portion of the rifles and a shitton of ammo, or you can send no ammo, the same number of rifles, and fill all that ammo space with rocket launchers that can kill tanks and choppers.

There is limited space and time, it's about what can they get in the space available that will make the most difference.

Isn't the whole point of the AK platform first and foremost was ease of manufacturing, extreme reliability and ease of use? If they can match the AR even with that, then hmmm.

Its not fuddlore. In fact most US gun guys will tell you the M16 was actually worse.

The AK, meanwhile, is regarded as some sort of god tier indestructible gun.

In reality, old school AKs are dead reliable, but anything past the late 60s begins so really suffer from soviet engineering. And most of the ones being used now are made of subpar metals, have manufacturing inconsistencies, and other issues.

Iirc in the failure rate tests, AKs had a failure 1 in every 6000 rds. M4s had a failure 1 in every 11,000rds.

A properly maintained version of either is pretty damned reliable. However, the M4 wins the accuracy and ergonomics game easily.

Isn't that where Azov was allegedly encircled? I just want to know where backwards Stalingrad is going to happen so I can get the popcorn heated up.

They did this already. It's called no one can leave the country. But it's a Free and Patriotic country just like ours! I am watching a bunch of live feeds and all I hear and see are crows.

Your history is all fucked up.

The reliability argument has historically been about mechanical function more than accuracy, but as has been pointed out this is mostly a fuddlore thing due to most people's exposure to real AK's being some burned out gun from the 80's that has fought off both the Soviets and the Americans and hasn't been cleaned once since it was delivered.
