I could be wrong, but I don't think there will be much of an actual battle. If you look at the city on satellite images, there are ODAs to the west, east, and north and of course the sea to the south. I'd suspect that they'll station besiegers in the towns around the city like Sartan, move ships into the area, and then force the defenders to come out so they can use arty and airstrikes. My suspicion is that they didn't think the Ukrainian forces would try to hold the city because of this, and that's why they drug their feet over the last couple of days.

The reliability argument has historically been about mechanical function more than accuracy, but as has been pointed out this is mostly a fuddlore thing due to most people's exposure to real AK's being some burned out gun from the 80's that has fought off both the Soviets and the Americans and hasn't been cleaned once since it was delivered.

Its not fuddlore. In fact most US gun guys will tell you the M16 was actually worse.

The original M16 had teething issues when it debuted in Vietnam.

In reality, old school AKs are dead reliable, but anything past the late 60s begins so really suffer from soviet engineering. And most of the ones being used now are made of subpar metals, have manufacturing inconsistencies, and other issues.

Are you basing that off legit Kalashnikovs, or knock-offs made by Norinco, Century, PSA, Brandon Herrera's garage, et al?

There's no solving it lol. The only people who think AKs are some sort of god tier guns are poeple stuck 70 years ago. On top of that, most the ones used today are Chineseum shit.

Pretty sure the Ukrainian army uses the AK-74. But it's irrelevant, modern optics are a bigger difference-maker than caliber or action these days. All shipping the Ukrainian army M4s would do is put unfamiliar weapons with poor ammunition supplies into the hands of the infantry. And FWIW, there is no meaningful practical difference between the AK-74 and the AR platform when equipped with similar sights and in the hands of a reasonably competent shooter. At that point, victory is going to be determined by logistics and tactics, not equipment.
