Can the economist larpers here explain to a retard like me how the sanctions are a bad thing for Russia?
They can still sell natural gas and shit right?
If western imports are being restricted wouldn't that promote domestic products?
Wouldn't this just advance Russia being independent from the west? And is that a bad thing for them?
We're caught in between two realities at the moment, one in which the world treat's $USD as a stable and fundamentally sound currency with which all parties are comfortable completing transactions(if not treating it with a massive preference above other sovereign currencies), and one in which the dollar is dead, doomed to the crypt of dead currency. We were already on a collision course for the demise of the $USD, the events that have occurred over the past 2 weeks have only hastened it. The world now knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that the entire American empire is built upon the dollar, and its ability to be used as a weapon, by drawing the ire of Globohomo Russia has displayed to every other country that the dollar is nothing more than a tool by which America enslaves other nations. Sanctions mean nothing(especially when you're still buying energy from them lmao) effectively the west has shot themselves in the foot by exposing the last and final trump card they had to play; seemingly few countries outside of Europe and North America are eager to jump onto the sanctions bandwagon, leaving huge portions of the globe open for business with the Russians who have widely sought after commodities for sale. Any of the normal sperging about GDP, the stock market, etc is meaningless at this point because we don't live in the world we once did, we just have to wait for everyone else to catch up.

Both the Macro and Micro economics of the world will change drastically because of the events in ukraine, it will just take some time for it to occur. Really to me Ukraine isn't that important of an event, its the response of western nations and the course they've chosen that is of key importance. Even if Russia lost the war in Ukraine the cats already out of the bag, and we already have nations refusing to comply with demand for sanctions.

Does Germany expect to be able to continue to buy oil from Russia during all of this?
I'm more curious how they try to explain it legally.

They intend to reopen that pipeline2 thing the second things calm down, at the very least.

Otherwise they'd just bomb the German side of it and that would be the end of it.
remember who sits on the supervisory board - the chancellor before merkel took over. there was a lot of handwringing the last week about it, with the biggest irony being they can't say too much about it because a) his party now part of the ruling government b) getting cushy jobs after their political stint is par the course for every party, so they can't fling shit without hitting themselves.

Why wouldn't you call your family after being taken POW so they can at least be reassured they are alive and not missing, presumed dead?
Ukraine army putting it on social media is dumb. They don't seem to do it because they care so much about Russian soldiers but hoping to break Russian morale.

Just as they post pics of killed Russian soldiers to their families and then brag with it on social media too. They also think it will lower morale while it makes them hated.

Well, to use information from the video I posted earlier about their aviation industry as an example, Russia's flag carrier is Aeroflot. It's their biggest airliner. They operated 980 jets before the invasion started fucking things up. 515 of them aren't owned outright by Aeroflot, they're leased from a company that specifically does jet leasing. Apparently this is common in the aviation industry. So with the EU imposing sanctions, the leasing company is legally required to cancel the lease. There are apparently standard contract provisions for such a scenario. The upshot is that Aeroflot is contractually obligated to return those 515 planes to the leasing company by the end of March, which is really fucking fast for the aviation industry. So some poor bastards at Aeroflot get the job of figuring out the practical logistics of that, and possibly of convincing some government official or oligarch that not returning the planes will be bad for them in the long run when relations normalize. Even though in the short term it means being fucked over by having fewer planes and fewer places to fly them.

Then assuming that goes off smoothly, Aeroflot placed their biggest maintenance facility in Germany. Where they can't fly anything to at the moment. So all their maintenance just became more difficult as they'll have to make do with smaller, less capable facilities located in Russia. Which brings up the next point. Basically everything that Aeroflot owns outright and is currently flying either 1) is western designed and made 2) is Russian made using western engines, or 3) is Russian designed and made using western components, particularly in the engines. With sanctions in place, Aeroflot cannot get spare parts from the west, nor can their manufacturers get components.

Meaning that in a few months, the largest airliner of Russia will either grind to a halt as things break and the run out of spares or routine maintenance cannot be performed for lack of spare parts; or Russia will be forced to operate increasingly unsafe jets. They can't just wing it, as skimping on maintenance or using jury-rigged replacement parts is a good way for something to go wrong that results in planes full of people falling out of the sky.

"Just make domestic" isn't a great solution either as it's a long term one. Yes Russia has engines in development that don't rely on western components. However they weren't expected to be certified for another couple years. And ramming stuff through without proper certification is another great way to have planes crashing from preventable faults.

So in the short term, Russia's aviation industry is fairly fucked. In the long term if sanctions stay in place, it means a return to something closer to a Soviet era aviation industry for them. Which wasn't exactly the safest.

What is your point? Yeah, that's the Ukrainian Waffen-SS unit. There were also Russian, Latvian, Estonian, Albanian ones. Even one made up of Indians.
He means that currently there are a few elite battalions in Ukraine who use these symbols.

That's what they are rushing to figure out right now, although a lot of the parliament is probably expecting nothing will change and they will be bale to keep their inefficient green toys and still eat 90% of their gas from Russia.
Needless to say they are in for a rude awakening
Should be amusing when Russia starts charging them twice, 5 times, or even 10 times the current going rate for gas.

I know the West -- NATO, EU, US (especially the US) -- is used to being able to arbitrarily fuck over other countries by fiat, but Russia's big enough that they can fuck right back. No, Russia isn't going to be able to use Econ-Warfare like the GloboHomo establishment can, but they absolutely cut Germany and the EU off from exports or charge them such an absurdly huge markup to really make people hurt.

they're working on it, iirc they are planning to extend their harbors so they can import more LNG. of course that will take it's time. it's probably the same hogwash as suddenly wanting to have "the most power army in europe" (excuse the link, all the others were chinese sites. western media apparently didn't mention it all for some reason...)

from the article "In the regular annual budget, the debt brake applies, and all the more we now really have to be careful with every euro,” said the minister.

I really want to see those faggots get raked over the coals, but knowing them they'll just accrue more debt

people are upset that a holocaust memorial didn't get damaged because it might slightly reduce the negative impact on Russia. Ukraine is officially more important than a holocaust memorial to them
Ahhhh fucking reddit, the true breeding grounds of dumb cunt. I once got down voted to fuck for pointing out there was (subtle) sarcasm in a video and the person was actually joking.

The fact that was a joke was in the fucking description.

Captured Russian soldiers have to call their mother/family.
If there is one country with the worst PR then I dare to say it's Ukraine.
Wow, I forget who I was listening to, but they played a recording of a Russian soldier's last call to their mother before they died, and the context made it sound like they died in combat. If this is what they were talking about, and these guys were killed in captivity, that dramatically decreases my sympathy for Ukraine. If both sides are barbarians, why should I care who wins or loses?
