President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Ukraine foreign minister: Russian army is "firing from all sides" on Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

The Russian army is "firing from all sides upon Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe," Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted on Friday.

"Russians must IMMEDIATELY cease the fire, allow firefighters, establish a security zone!" Kuleba said.

The mayor of the town of Energodar said earlier that firefighters are unable to reach the fire, which is ongoing.

Fire breaks out at nuclear power plant in Ukraine

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine is on fire, according to Dmytro Orlov, the mayor of the nearby town of Energodar.

“I demand, stop! Immediately stop shelling the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant point blank,” the mayor said in a video message.

In an earlier post he wrote, “stop shelling the Zaporizhzhia power plant".

See? The new S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game isn't going to get cancelled. We'll just play it IRL.

I suppose the Russians decided that if they couldn't take the country, they'd rather have it be destroyed by a nuclear accident.

That's truly desperate of them. I suppose the reports saying that they'll be out of money and guns come Sunday are probably true.
This just in, Ukrainian intelligence managed to take a picture of the commander leading the troops firing on Zaporizhzhia.

He's quoted calling the situation, "Не здорово, не ужасно."

I remember a nat geo article that was just post-Soviet fall that basically said you could be pretty confident that the USSR had fallen because so many soldiers had sold off their uniforms and cool ushinka hats on the black market to western collectors. Not to mention generals backdooring warehouses full of AKs.

To bring it back to the situation at hand.. holy shit is the black market arms trade gonna thrive if this thing goes “our way”. I’m actually a little concerned at A) how well those javelins and NLAWs we’re handing out like candy to anybody in a yellow armband are performing in battle, and B) who’s getting their hands on them after all is said and done..
Bruh I'm stoked, I'm just hoping we see AK12 parts kits start to trickle out.

This is like getting in a fight with your neighbor so you burn down his house. Except you all live in the same fucking apartment.

Exactly. Putin really has a case of "if I can't have it, no man shall!" syndrome. Even if it fucks up his country, he'd rather let that happen over his enemies winning a victory.

Then again, he and his oligarch friends probably have safe houses and shelters where they can weather any radioactive fallout, so he doesn't give a fuck.

If the situation in Zaporizhzhia continues to deteriorate, and we might have another Chernobyl situation, there's no way in hell Russia and Putin going to survive. The West, especially the Europeans, are going to send troops. China, India, and whatever allies Russia have left will abandon them. No one, no matter how stupid or crazy they are, want a nuclear wasteland to happen, much less in Europe

Well, Putin is delirious, so this is probably his way of saying "FUCK YOU!" to the rest of the world, including his fellow Russians who don't want this war.

Chernobyl is at risk, too, apparently:

I usually like to include an appropriate number of snarky zingers in most of my stories. This is not a time for them. Putin's invasion of Ukraine is on the verge of creating a radioactive fallout disaster such as the world has never seen.

During my on-air reporter days, I had good contacts in Eastern Europe. It was during the time of the Soviet Union break-up, so a lot of good news stories came out of that area. One particular contact was a Swede who provided aid to the families of the firefighters and others who died in the aftermath of the Chernobyl explosion.

The explosion in the early morning hours of April 26, 1986 was in reactor no. 4 at the Lenin power plant at Chernobyl. Ten years later, I was one of only two Western reporters inside the 30km zone of exclusion around the power plant. In fact, we were inside the control room for the then-still-operating reactor no. 3, interviewing the senior operator who had been on duty the night of the explosion ten years earlier.

Sergey (not his real name for obvious reasons) confessed to us that the greatest ongoing potential danger of the Chernobyl disaster was considered a state secret in Ukraine. When reactor no. 4 exploded, the 100-ton top cover of the reactor, which Sergey referred to as the "lid," settled vertically alongside the remains of the reactor. It was, and still is, teetering on its edge.

In the event that it is disturbed by an earthquake or other outside force such as a Russian missile or artillery strike, it could tip over. If it did, 43 tons of highly radioactive dust would instantly be released into the atmosphere. None of the so-called protective sarcophagi built over the remains of reactor no. 4 would have the slightest success stopping the distribution of the poisonous dust.

If this radioactive fallout were released, it would re-contaminate the area out about 80 km from the plant. Even worse, winds high in the atmosphere would carry the radioactive dust thousands of miles. It was those types of winds that carried the fallout from the original explosion over Sweden, triggering the worldwide alarm when the Soviets tried to hide the news of the original explosion in '86.

In case readers might think time has eradicated the problem, those submicroscopic dust particles will remain radioactive for 25,000 years.

I was able to reach the now-retired Sergey via email this morning. He confirmed that the lid is still teetering on the edge, and Russian missiles or artillery (he can't tell which) are landing near the Chernobyl plant.

God help us if one of them is just a little too accurate!

At this point I’m not sure which is scarier: Putin going full scorched earth on purpose, or his gopnik army being so bad at war fighting that they do something stupid like this on accident.

Well, I think I'll say, a little column A, and a little column B. His forces are stupid enough to hit a nuclear reactor by accident, considering that most of his army are just high school conscripts, but an attack of that scale on a nuclear power plant? That's on purpose.

I don't know about you guys but this will be REALLY bad for the economy if that thing melts down. Don't think the media will cover Russia too kindly either.

What kind of death toll are we looking at from fallout? There's no way they're this retarded. What is Russia doing.

it'd be one thing to disable it. that thing accounts for a lot of energy. at the very least killing the grid makes sense.

But their actions aren't just cutting off that thing from the grid. It seems that they're aiming to cause a fucking Chernobyl-style disaster, with their continuous attack.

Despite being allegedly fired upon by the great Vatnik horde, I'm now seeing reports that firefighters have gained access to the plant. It looks like the only thing that caught fire was the administrative building. There have been no changes in radiation levels around the facility as of right now

Even if there was a nuclear meltdown most of the radiation would be thrust into Russia itself so it would be another thing to add to the list of terrible decisions their government has made in the past eight days

I know it's a strategic position as it provides a massive amount of power to Ukraine but I still find it fucking ridiculous that they're allowed to fight that close to a potential disaster zone

The upside is I’m reading these things are a little “battle proof” by design. So somebody has to really fuck around with the interiors or drop some very heavy bunker busting ordinance to crack the cores. But.. this is the same country that gave us Chernobyl. Which literally blew its top because somebody pushed the wrong button.

Considering he views that victory as US guns will be pointed against them so the west can plunder his resources his game plan of 'if I don't win everything is going' makes sense.
Then again, he and his oligarch friends probably have safe houses and shelters where they can weather any radioactive fallout, so he doesn't give a fuck.
And they absolutely do. The elites suffer nothing from this.

Let's hope to God that's the full extent of the damage. And nothing else. Even if the radiation is mostly thrust into Russia, that will affect millions of innocent Russian civilians. Not the elites that hang around Putin.

Indeed. He is that delusional. He turned what could have been a great diplomatic victory into a war he can't win. It's not surprising that he'd do something that stupid.

And they absolutely do. The elites suffer nothing from this.
Of course they don't. They couldn't care less for the nation if it burns.

Well I guess Putin said "fuck it, let's just destroy the country, that why no one can have it!!"

I have a feeling if Russia really does something this stupid. China just going to give up and say "fuck it, where Allie more with India at least they didn't do anything mind fucking retadred"
