I'd say them having any sustainable sub operations in the gulf of Mexico is a stretch at the present. Their sub fleet may be the best part of their navy, but the post Cold War cuts took their toll. Just look at the accident rate they have.

The US navy has run a few major surface combatants into a sandbank and recently lost the aircraft carrier USS Bonhomme Richard to fire after sailors failed to press the correct button accidents are not the best judge of naval combat capability

It's a pretty common strategy for freelancers or independent journalists to use credentials for famous outlets. The CNN, NYT, etc are household names even in shitty parts of the world, and makes it less likely to get hassled by locals or shaken down for bribes. Worst case if you get into serious shit, hopefully the people you are dealing with figure you're worth enough to ransom rather than just shoot and dump in a ditch.

I'm still interested in whether it was the Russians as they claimed, or the Ukrainians who shot him. Some reports claimed that the area was still under Ukrainian control, so it seems weird he would get shot at a Russian checkpoint.
