Not sure if it still applies, but you could get French citizenship if you were on the legion, so a lot of foreigners would join.
Edit: Foreign legion is the only branch of the army in france that doesn't require citizenship to apply and you can still get citizenship after beign on the legion for a few years.

The Ukraine situation isn’t like Cambodia nor is the situation as black and white as the media portrays. I swear to god The Killing fields 1984 uses that song in the end credits ONCE = every war, “humanitarian disaster” (which is a bullshit term btw), covid 19 (celebrity sing along), African kids starving on tv - all need Imagine as a background track. I get it, imagine is a very very good song to listen to high and I’m sure it was very deep and impactful in 1971 but it’s simply not anymore. Too many people have ruined it, overused it and convoluted its message. It’s like a big clown world joke.

Nah French Foreign Legion makes sense from an "Enlightened self interest" standpoint. The idea is that poor foreigners can join and get a first-world paycheck and first-world citizenship in return for service. Since plenty of people in the third world would literally kill for that (keep in mind the FFL was part of their African army until after WWII) you can tell them what they're in for up front and they can determine if it is worth it. And they get to feel like they earned their way in.

The DRC pays you $300 a year, the Foreign legion pays you $1400 a month, then it is a solid idea to join the foreign legion.

Yeah, the French Foreign Legion was basically mercenary work that would take people without other military experience on their resume, and actually trained and equipped them. Not a lot of legal entry level positions for a career in shooting people, so it filled a niche that appealed to a certain type of guy.
