Sorry but I'm not really adept at this specific field, but from what I gathered an update to a widely used opensource project has maleware in it that will put a gay message if you are a regular user and will nuke your disk if you are from Voldemort country. The amount of autism is legendary on the comments from the devs is legendary and it's best to chronicle what will happen since it will likely be wiped out pretty soon.

EDIT: Ah, to be proven wrong is nice. Apparently the code to wipe was committed, but quickly removed after. So he's just stupid, but at least has some empathy.

it is unfair. Unfortunately, these people are idiots and believe that the ends justify the means, and would rather virtue signal and maintain an image.

Same goes for the businesses who think pulling Russian vodkas off the shelves is somehow going to help. If they really did care about the invasion, they would not only pull them off the shelves, but resell them and give a majority of the income gained (if not all) to help fund the Ukrainian army, so they can afford weapons, tanks, ammo, etc. Whatever they need. Or, better yet, it would help fund infrastructure destroyed by Russians, or even help buy Ukrainian families food and shelter. But nope.

This is genuinely one of the most malicious fucking things I've ever seen in programming world.

I'm gonna pull a card from their playbook and point out that this is genuinely racist and biggoted, but it only effects who they perceive as "white people", so what do they care? Most of the people who are going to be actively harmed by this likely do not support the war or want nothing to do with it, but "Russia bad", so again, who cares? Let's destroy people's property and make it impossible to contact the outside world to own Putin amirite? Nuance is a fantasy concept to them.


You don't have to go out and commit violent crimes like rape and murder to be a monster. These idiots prove that time and time again.

I think the worst part of it is that, aside from distant shortwave radio broadcasts, the Internet via VPN is probably the only way that ordinary Russians (and Belorussians) can get the other side of the story about what's going on in Ukraine so destroying ordinary Russians' computers is depriving them of information from non-Putin-approved sources.

Not quite. He's been busy deleting comments and calling people liars for even suggesting it was malware. He also quietly disabled the API key the malware used for its geolocation API calls so it couldn't work anymore even if it's installed.

He's still lying his ass off in other issue threads (namely in vue-cli, who fortunately had the good sense to fix their dependencies on it) too.

He has no remorse, no regrets and is still convinced he did nothing wrong.

This shit right here is why politics have no place in software development.

This is why I prefer to write stuff in C++. No, it's not completely immune to this kind of shit either, but the usual stuff people have come to rely on has been around a lot longer and is much more vetted and the kind of modern Californian asshole developer (like this guy) who would do something like this has little chance of comprehending, much less contaminating or compromising C or C++ software. I suspect once he's chased out of the node community he'll go play around with Go or Rust or some other hipster shit. They can have him.

Especially since most of the "Russian-sounding" vodkas aren't from Russia anymore.

Stoli is the usual target, but the guy that owns the brand fled the RF when Putin took power. That's how retarded these people are.
