They're literally getting $800 million in military aid from the US.
You're looking at that the wrong way. It's an amazingly cost effective way to get the Mighty Russian Army to deplete itself of Tanks,Armored Vehicles, Bowel Contents and global relevancy. At no cost in American lives. Plus it lets the Pentagon R&D crew field test out some of their more clever and barbaric weapons systems against a target that everybody hates. All for less than the cost of one modern warship.

Seriously, can you imagine how many sales of javelins this will create? It's a good time to be in the missile game

Look, ethnic conflicts in any state are a mother fucker. I don't dispute that. But claiming that Crimea universally was waiting for Russia to come in and take them over is disingenuous. South Ossetia would be a better argument, as they have half of their state in actual Russian territory. The thing is though, Putin has, inarguably fanned these ethnic tensions, flat out funded civil wars in these regions, and then used the rightful response against that civil war to invade. It is what he did in Georgia when they got uppity, and once that happens, everyone suffers but him.

I said this earlier, and I will say it again, Just because you don't like the way something in your country went does not give you the right to fucking invade government buildings, start a war, and say "ALL YO SHIT IS MINE NOW!" when things do not go your way. Look at the polling we have in these areas Donbass did NOT want to be part of Russia in 2014, which was up until then the absolute low point of relations between east Ukraine and the rest of the nation. There were separatists there, for certain, but a lot of Ukranians too, million and change of whom have been deported for the crime of not being Russian. Mariupol almost fell at that time as well.

Always hear about the loss of life in Donbass, and that would have never been an issue for this long without Putin arming and also sending troops up from Crimea then strong arming a cease fire that he knew no side would be able to keep.

Any chance of solving the situation amicably, which Ukraine had done before in the aughts, was out the window once that started.
This. Also, Putins logic has worked the last two times he tried it. The third time? It's failed. I'm not even Russian and even I understand the historical trauma of what is happening right now. Putin has essentially ordered the Russian Army to go full Grozny on ethnically Russian cities. The greatest loss of Russian lives since the second world War is occurring on Putins watch. More Russian Soldiers have died in the past 2 weeks then the first year of the Afghan War.

But I think the most unforgivable sin is more Russian people have been killed in the past month, by the Russian Army, since the Nazi invasion. Putin has put the Russian military into that same dubious pantheon. Just as the Third Reich once reduced Kharkiv, now the Russian Federation does the same.

This is a wound that will still be fresh, a century from now. I think that is the greatest tragedy of this mess. Putin dreamed of reuniting the Russian peoples and all he has done is sunder it.

It's frustrating how little empathy exists in these slap fights. Nobody can for a moment think about the human cost. Or the historical costs. Just my tribe good. Enemy tribe bad.

It was shot down by a Buk fired from the separatist region, which was later brought to Luhansk and then moved back to Russia.
It also seemed to be an honest mistake. Somebody looked up some stuff and claimed there was a regular supply plane coming around this time.
If anything, someone probably saw a blip of a similar size around the expected time and pushed a button.

Civilian aircraft have transponders to prevent this sort of thing. I'm not sure if whatever radar system the separatists were using could pick up a transponder saying "I'm a civilian aircraft" however, but if it didn't it must have been extremely ancient.

I assume you would say the same thing about the Maidan protestors who seized government buildings and overthrew an elected government? You present the uprisings in Donbas as completely separate events but they were done in response to the Maidan movement violently overthrowing the government. It's entirely disingenuous.

I would suggest you look up the Buk user's manual and see if it can actually read current transponders and not just Soviet/Russian IFF lol
If it can, the user's may not have been very skilled with the system (if the Russians left it completely to the Donbass guys and didn't leave a crew)
