Anyway, some tabloids are picking up on the conspicuous absence of Russia's defence minister (Sergey Shoigu) for almost two weeks now. Some are speculating he's under house arrest owing to Russia's performance in Ukraine.

I doubt this specifically, but it could be the ol' dictator Yes Man problem. Sure the Yes Man can get away if minor fuck ups because he said yes or said something would be easy, but if he causes a major fuck up he's in trouble.

Factoid about Shoigu however, even though he's both Minister of Defense and General of the Army, he has little (if any) military experience, he was mainly a civil engineer and the governor of the Moscow Oblast for a few months before being appointed Defense Minister and General of the Army shortly after that. So him saying "Yes Putin, Ukraine will fall in a week maximum!" and him seriously believing it isn't totally out of the question.

The actual NATO estimate was 7,000 - 15,000; with 7K being the minimum and 15K being the max, and I'm pretty sure the Russian MoD actually came out and said that like 9.5K or so personnel had lost their lives in the campaign.

I seriously doubt the Russian MoD is actually over-stating its own combat losses, so even taken at face value the NATO estimate of 7K-15K is most likely correct.
(now admittedly a range of virtually 8K is a pretty big fucking range, but the Russian numbers are admitting to something that falls in said range)

while this might have been the state in kabul, it certainly was not the state in the more rural parts of the country, where the vast majority of the population lived

People are just having a hard time believing thousands of troops could be killed in the span of a month, they're too used to massive manpower and technology disparities between countries. I don't believe it's 15k dead, but I'd be shocked if we hadn't hit at least 6k Russian dead yet, logistics difficulties and a seemingly lack of airborne CASEVAC are definitely pumping up these numbers.

At best, Kommsomolskaya Pravda is a yellow press and would not trust these numbers, even if they claimed hacking.

Part of it is almost western propaganda shooting itself in the foot.
What NATO actually said: "Based on our estimates its anywhere from as low as 7K dead to as high as 15K dead"
What the headline reads: "RUSSIAN DEAD COULD BE AS HIGH AS 15K!!!"

Say what you want about NATO, and there is lots to say about NATO, but their estimate gave a range (granted, a huge range) not a hard "100% 15K Russians dead".

Edit: Yeah I couldn't trace that Russian MoD claim. Seems dubious.
But still...
