Ehhhh... Lewisporte is a pretty nice town, but it would certainly fit most people's definition of backwater. Newfoundland also suffered a complete economic collapse in the early 1990s when the cod fishery closed with 20+% unemployment. That being said, I don't particularly buy that someone who is a PHD candidate and moved the the mainland grew up dirt poor. Not skeety enough, honestly.
