I’ve had my notifs on this entire time so I was aware of a new cria but damn… What in God’s name has been going on with these people? It’s been 8 days since I last checked in and it’s all gone to shit :story:

To be a baby animal on the tranch is a living nightmare. Not only are they born into a world of cold, hunger, and neglect but at any moment one of these sloth brained lummoxes' can pick them up, tear them from their loving mother, and squeeze them in a retard hug. Take a few pictures then set them on the dirty floor to die slowly.

I don't buy the "no vet will help us" cry. They are blaming vets for not being fully stocked with alpaca plasma or not being "willing" to do blood transfusions, when an ounce of preparation could have prevented needing those things at all. Shady.
I think it has more to do with the Tranch failing financially and them being unable to afford a vet. You're point still stands, if you own livestock surprise pregnancies shouldn't be a thing. These are animals that you are able to control every aspect of their lives, they aren't trailer trash teens banging bareback behind the dumpster.

I don't want to derail the thread with agricultural sperging, but are you sure about this? I can't think of a single other mammal species (humans apart) where the mother doesn't clean her own baby.
Sorry mods made me sit in time out..

But I do believe we're all long past apologising for sperging out in this thread. I come here expecting to be schooled in something new every week. How else am I going to impress my dates but with random facts about dry walling or defending against imaginary saboteurs.

I still can't believe they don't have a properly stocked medical drawer somewhere, especially for cases like this. I think you can keep alpaca plasma frozen too?

Like, do they just take the serfs out back when they hurt themselves? Technically still the most humane I think in this case, but still.

And there are rescues in their area. I'm sure they would've shared or helped. Or did they not want anyone to see the state of their animals?

The Tranch loses money on every alpaca they have, they shouldn't be letting the animals get pregnant in the first place. You shouldn't be raising more animals that don't make you money, I know they are anarcho-cummunist charity, but they still need money.
Frankly bringing this one inside taking a million photos and making some Gofundme based on saving its life, is the only way Oliva will make the Tranch a dollar. So in terms of a business they are doing everything right, if this helps to bump their fundraisers.

Can’t wait for the vet to give them another official alpaca autopsy report.
Anyway this could be linked to Earl?

There's been a meme circulating on the F*c*B**k about "People think farmhouse style is white upholstery, copper kettles, and exposed beams, but it's really having an entryway full of muddy outerwear, syringes and bottles of dewormer by the sink, a jerry-rigged pen by the fireplace for reject lambs, and a shotgun by the back door at all times."

Or something to that effect.

To change the subject and hopefully add some content to this otherwise low-content post, apparently alpacas need 2 pounds of hay per day 125 lb animal. Since their animals are all emaciated, they probably weigh about this much. 200 animals times 2 lbs of hay gives us 400 lbs of hay per day. A small bale weighs about 50 lbs, so they need 4 bales a day. According to the internet, hay goes for about $10 per bale of that size. So that's $40 a day on hay, or $14,600 a year.

Sounded like this pregnancy was down to incompetent farming practices but your point stands.
The other thing I’ve been meaning to go back and check: I am sure the official tranch headcount was 300 something near the end of last year. But Kevin just a day or two ago put it at “about 200”. If both those are correct they’ve been doing a lot of off-camera burying and wolf feeding over the winter.

Well, the wolves always have room for one more.
I like the idea that the alpacas bond with the wolves and then join as a terrible herd to be reckoned with. Don't blame the wolves for easy prey of course.
They actually make me MOTI. I don't see how they can call themselves a rescue. By their standards auschwitz was also a rescue apparently.
One called itself a work camp, one a rescue. It's just hiding.
They'd be better off selling Kevin for medical experimentation
I'm sure we can gofundnull for that. I know he'd love another mouth to feed *yawn*
Apparently Olivia is still alive 🦙 ❤️? They made it sound like she died??? Everyone in the comments thought she did.
Honestly Penny abandoning his two previous children is for the better if this is how they treat babies. It's also why I laugh at Kevin saying "Well maybe I DID want a child but the state won't take care of it so I have to sterilize chuds???"

I'm not exactly a seasoned expert on running charitable ventures, but I must stress that starting a charitable venture to bank camelid plasma while also running a charitable venture to bring various supplies to the Lakota (and driving hundreds of miles to do so twice a month because you didn't plan logistics), while also running a charitable venture to provide a safe haven to trans people, while also running a charitable venture to rehome alpaca, while also running a ranch with over 200 alpaca, while also attempting to renovate a 1920s era home in order to meet ends meet, while also constantly getting sick because you're increasingly frail and injured and not taking care of yourself because you're potentially down to $7 in the bank - it's not the most sustainable plan I've ever heard of.

Jack of all trades, master of none.
Or is, jack-ass of all trades, mistress of none, more fitting?
Nvm, jack-ass of all trades, master of none, is more accurate.

A lot of farm vets can be pretty rough too.

I can imagine one looking at these people, hearing they have no money while also owning a plethora of expensive animals and thinking "ehhh probably for the best to let nature take its course on this one"
The Tranch also has to be weird if they actually discuss their goals, what they're willing to learn to do themselves, and how much they're willing to spend on an animal.

Start a county-wide alpaca plasma bank and administrate it ourselves? Definitely!
Transfuse from one of our own alpacas? No, no way.
Go outside and check which alpaca just gave birth? Ehh, too much effort.

Olivia finally died 💔. On the bright side we have a new exploitable meme.

They chipped the wood sjdjdjdkdddd...

Walking and eating again are nearly always signs the worst has passed, especially if the youngster is doing foodbeg noises, so I'm more than slightly suspicious. Not, for once, of them lying about things though.
If it were a lamb that was walking and eating after an infection, then suddenly dropped dead, I'd be 100% that it was overzealously fed out of concern/pity. Lambs are extraordinarily dumb and will happily eat until they bust something. Seeing as it's cria though, I don't know for sure. Some of the skills and experience transfer over, some definitely do not.

I dislike not being sure. Why the fuck couldn't they just have sheep, instead of some lanky useless eating machines?

I think you're right. I couldn't figure out what wasn't adding up, but it does sound like they were just asking everyone to give them help for free. The "willing to help" comment especially makes sense if they were just asking for favors, not "service," per se.

This, my vet does mostly farm animals along with pets, and he's very blunt about certain medical interventions not being worth it for the animal's wellbeing. Farm vets have seen everything and will tell you when it's too late.

Not only if it's too late, but if it's "worth it."

Now I'm a bleeding heart so I'll always do everything to postpone my pets lives, as long as it doesn't mean they're gonna be in pain and suffering for an extra few months or years.

But farm vets definitely have the farm mindset. If the animal will be painfree but otherwise not suitable for work or whatever their "function" is, a lot are cool with euthanasia. Like putting a lame horse down that can't race.

Bleeding heart as I am, I imagine I'd even wonder if death is best for the pet after looking at where it has to go back to

I admit I'm usually relieved when he's busy and I have to go to another vet! I totally have been caught flat-footed by him before with bad news and it feels awful, whereas other vets will be more gentle and optimistic about it. However, he usually has quicker and more accurate diagnoses without needing any expensive tests done. Farm wisdom is pure truth, and that's worth a lot.

Gotta say Penny's "the herd lives on" is a really creepy way of putting it. Has a very ritualistic "long live the king/tranch" feel.
