Some people have names that aren't obvious what gender the person is, or you have the occasional 'boy named Sue' situations. It's not a full-blown 'he/him' thing, it can be as simple as Mr. John Doe or Ms./Mrs. Jane Smith. The use of gendered titles like that removes any ambiguity and saves people from embarrassing situations.
