A teenager has died after falling from a drop ride at a theme park in Orlando, Florida

The 14-year-old fell from the plunging ride - the world's tallest free-standing drop tower - at ICON park, just after 11pm on Thursday.

The teen, who has not yet been identified, was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries, Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

Terrifying footage captured the horrific accident and the screams of witnesses as the boy fell from the ride, which rotates around a tower as it rises in the air before plunging to the ground at 75 miles per hour.

The ride, the Orlando Free Fall, opened in December 2021, stands at 430ft tall and can accommodate up to 30 people.

The vehicle rotates around a central tower as it rises. After it reaches the top, riders tilt forward and face the ground briefly before free-falling at approximately 75 miles per hour.

It was not immediately clear how the teenager became free from the ride's seat belt or how many people were on the tower at the time.

ICON Park on International Drive has not yet commented on the tragedy. Police have opened an investigation into the incident.

A teenager has died after falling from a drop ride at ICON theme park on International Drive in Orlando, Florida just after 11pm on Thursday

The teen, who has not yet been identified, was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries, Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

It comes less than two years after a park employee died after falling 200 feet from the Orlando StarFlyer attraction.

The 21-year-old employee was performing a safety check about halfway up the 450-foot-tall ride when he plummeted to his death just before 8am on September 14, the Orange County Sheriff's Office stated.

The worker struck a platform below the ride at ICON Park on International Drive in Orlando and went into cardiac arrest, according to first responders who were called to the scene.

The man was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

The swing ride opened to the public in 2018. According to the description on the attraction's official site, StarFlyer has no age limit and no weight limit, and the minimum height required to go on the ride is just 44 inches.

The ride is made up of 24 double seats that travel up and down and around the giant tower for 3-4 minutes.

At the time of the fall, the worker was about halfway up the 450-foot-high ride, billed at the world's tallest swing ride

She's maintaining a safe distance from the person in front of her and can't go any faster. People like him should be summarily executed.

now deleted, but News 13 tries to get clever with new info that he was officially way too fucking huge for the ride, according to some rando

286 seems an odd weight limit? Does it line up to a round number in Kilos? If his actual weight was 330 than his weight likely should not have been the problem. He wasn't that far over. There should be enough splash margin to account for teenaged morons being bad at "guess my weight". The real problem was more likely his height. Or weight/height combination.

She's part of the group in front of her. She's taking selfies with her Italian fag family. The dude can't stop he has more mass then her and has people behind him. People like her should be raped, flayed, and then their family should be forced to cannibalize the remains and never speak of her again. She broke the rules and then got knocked the fuck out because it turns out you can't stop physics.

Nigger that's a grownass man screeching like a retard and possibly concussing a little kid because he's assmad about an amusement park ride being disappointing. Nevermind that judging by how close the previous cart was, the girl couldn't have gone much faster without crashing into them. The person he hurt isn't even to blame for the ride being slow. What an absolute mongoloid.

ETA: For those who don't want to waste 8 minutes, the tardrage + crash happens at around the 5min mark.

Should junkies be paid more in drugs to keep carnival rides operational?

Why does Fox 35 use unflattering pictures of the recently deceased?

Null's right, we're all gonna die some day. But I don't want it to be today. No shitty carnival ride is worth it.
You'll never catch me on one of these fucking deathtraps.

When I was a teen, I rode a ride similar to this, with only the shoulder bar thing holding you in. The person securing us in didn't push mine in far enough I guess, and I was so thin that there was way too much wiggle room, and I had a big hoodie on. I was one of the last people to be "checked" and as soon as the attendant adjusted the bar they walked away and the ride started before I could even say anything. I tried to ratchet the bar further, but it was like it was locked in the spot it was in. I couldn't move it at all. I stupidly thought "well it must be okay" but the first drop nearly slid me entirely out of the seat just like what happened to this poor kid.

I was screaming and crying and certain I was going to be thrown from the ride the next time it flipped, like I could feel my jacket pinned by the bar, but I was like slipping out of it. My mom was on the ride right next to me, unaware of what was going on and thinking that I was just scared of the ride. I still remember her saying "It's fine, you'll be okay, just enjoy the ride" until she realized I was way too hysterical for it just to be the ride scaring me. Then she started screaming for them to stop the ride and panicking, but we just got drowned out by everyone else screaming in excitement.

I think the only reason I managed to stay in my seat was because as soon as I started feeling myself fall out I slid my arms through the little handles and locked my arms together and held on for life.

Neither of us has ever ridden another ride like that. And I never will, and this just affirms my belief that I was lucky and reinforces the fear I have of these rides.

ICON Park: Accident Report in Teen's Orlando FreeFall Ride Death Says Seat Was Locked

Article / Archive

The seat of a teen who fell to his death from an amusement park ride in Florida last week was still locked, according to an accident report from the state.

Tyre Sampson, 14, fell Thursday from the FreeFall drop tower that takes riders up 430 feet and then drops at speeds of up to 75 mph, according to ICON Park in Orlando, where the incident happened.

Sampson came out of the seat when the magnets engaged to slow the ride during the descent, according to the report, which was based on ride employee witnesses and was obtained by CNN.

"Harness was still in a down and locked position when the ride stopped," said the report filed by the operator with the Fair Rides division of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The report named three witnesses, all listed as employees.

There are also questions around whether the teenager may have been too large to be allowed on the ride.

Sampson's father, Yarnell Sampson, raised that question Friday, telling CNN: "My son was 6'5", 340. So, he's a big guy."

The ride's Operations & Maintenance Manual, which has been posted online by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, indicates the maximum passenger weight is 130 kilograms (approximately 287 pounds).

"Be careful when seeing if large guests fit into the seats. Check that they fit within the contours of the seat and the bracket fits properly. If this is not so - Do not let this person ride," the manual states.

It's not clear if Sampson fit the contours of the seat or if the bracket fit properly.

CNN has reached out to the ride operator, Slingshot Group and ICON Park to ask whether Sampson fit properly.

Video circulating on social media, purportedly of the ICON Park incident, shows a person falling from their seat about five seconds into the ride's drop, perhaps about two-thirds of the way down, as the ride slowed as it approached the ground.

The accident is still under investigation, and the FreeFall ride is closed for now.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office is also investigating the death. No criminal charges have been filed but the investigation remained open, the sheriff's office said Friday.

ICON Park on Monday said it has demanded that Slingshot Group suspend another of its rides at the park, the Orlando SlingShot, "until such time as a thorough investigation by the appropriate authorities has been completed and all parties are satisfied that the rides are safe for the public," the park landlord said in a statement.

It isn't unexpected, nor does it change anything. Like I said in a few posts. we know the restraints were "locked" This isn't the old school ratcheting shoulder rig on the rollercoaster cars where it has to depress and click into place at a specific point. These are newer Hydraulic/Pneumatic systems. The bars come down and they have an analog range where they can lock. They lock in place at where they feel sufficient backpressure from the occupant. And they do not move more than a millimeter once set. The system in theory is safer, more comfortable and allows a broader range of sizes as it auto adjusts somewhat to the size of the rider. So the system thought it was down and locked sufficiently to restrain the rider. And we know this for certain because the ride would not, could not move unless that seats sensors were reporting that he was properly locked in. Plus if you watch the video very carefully you can see that his shoulder bars were still at the angle and place where they were "locked". He just managed to come out from under the bars. Because of his height and girth the bars "locked" at a point with a much larger gap between the bottom of the bars and the top of the seats nut crusher wedge, than would be normal. In many or most rides of this type there is often an extra buckled seat belt that goes from that nut crusher wedge and locks into the bottom of the shoulder bars. For some reason the designers of this atrocity didn't opt for that? I'm guessing maybe to increase cycle time and speed up loading and unloading. The fact that each seat had an indicator light in theory allowing the operator to visually check seat status rather than pulling on each restraint is a sign that that might be the case.

OK. So MULTIPLE entities screwed up here.
1. Confirmed that the ride manufactures had a valid locking position that was too high up.
2. The ride DID have a weight limit, but apparently this was neither posted or enforced, nor was there a scale to weigh questionable people. He should never have been on that ride per the ride's manual.
3. Carnies were improperly trained. Simply told that they must "fit in the seat" whatever that meant. The carnies thought that meant that the harness locked and had green lights all the way around.
4. Carnies failed the common sense test.

I mean of course they are, they're not gonna bite the bullet and say "yeah it's our fault we couldn't hire someone who knows when to lay off the weed"
Also "fell to his death" is a weird way of saying "catapulted out of his damn seat".

Pure pointless speculation on my part. But I think the problem was less his weight. Manufacturers are going to put about 100lbs of margin in their stated weight limits. Just becaused you can't expect methed up carnies to guess much closer than that. So much as the problem was his height. In order to get his shoulders under the shoulder bars he had to shift his hips forward. So he wasn't firmly planted in the seat and his (substantial) center of gravity was below the shoulder retraints protection and away from the seatback.

It seems a horribly designed safety system.

There’s a Lockheed Martin Plant next to Icon Park. I once accidentally drove into it since it’s exit on Sand Lake is just before Universal BLVD.

It scared the freaking crap out of me to read those words.

I’ve not been into Icon Park since.
