PL but a family member of mine recently had someone hit their car, it left a small amount of damage, nothing that was irreparable for less than a max of $300-$500.00 yet the insurance company decided to pay off the remaining costs of the vehicle and are now deciding to give them a new car while junking the other vehicle... The thing is the insurance company hasn't said what kind of vehicle they're allowed to select, but I have a suspicion it's electric. Otherwise their course of action makes no sense with such minor damage that I saw personally.

Once again, it's a tone-deaf response to the situation at hand. It's not even a solution, given that the market for cars is screwed up, electric cars are unaffordable to most Americans anyway, and used electric vehicles have exceptionally depreciated batteries and are difficult to repair due to their non-modular and highly computer-dependent parts. This statement also assumes that Americans would be able to get financing for the electric vehicle in the first place. It's like he didn't look at the public's response when he first suggested it in November and got similar flak for it.

This is not new. According to CNN, "In August, he announced a target that by 2030, half of the vehicles sold in the United States will be battery electric, fuel-cell electric or plug-in hybrid." While the Defense Production Act (DPA) is probably going to be used as early as this week to step up production of minerals used in the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries, it probably won't affect anything for at least a month when you take into consideration the time needed to refine the minerals, create the battery, transport it, and integrate it into car shells. It's not going to drive down the cost of batteries or make electric cars more affordable.
