Odessa is an interesting case, IIRC it was named by Catherine the Great after a place known in English as Odessos, akin to 'Odyssey,' hence одесса. Odessos does have a doubled 's' sound in Ancient Greek sources, though IIRC not all forms of Greek favour the doubled 's' and it regardless doesn't sound quite the same as in English or Russian. So it would be named after a Greek word that has important English analogues, rather than being a purely Slavic dispute.

Since English tends to use 'Odyssey,' 'Odessos,' etc., the pronunciation as 'Odessa' seems slightly more conventional. I do feel like the Ukrainian insistence on using one inaccurate transliteration over another is misplaced here, since 'Odessa' seems to harmonise more with typical English spelling of these words and gives more suggestion of the name's origins. However, it's probably not that important anyway, plus the pronunciation of 'd,' softened in Russian, etc., would be distinct anyway in an English transliteration.
