Well given that they were supposedly in a support position, I'm guessing someone thought it'd be okay to draw upon conscripts to work logistics. Driving supply trucks isn't a very high skill job, and theoretically isn't a high risk job either. If things had gone well for Russia, they'd have spent all their time driving around in rear areas safely behind the lines, and no one would have ever noticed or cared much if they did.

By the way, everyone, people live in the radiation zone still. They grow their vegetables in the soil and seemingly haven't gotten cancer yet.

Judging by this map found in the twitter links to the video of the trenches that purports to show their locations, I'm going to go ahead and hazard a guess that people aren't growing vegetables in the areas of high radiation:

this applies especially to eastern europe. people there arent too keen on western globohomo shit, but they are even less keen on the idea of falling under russian occupation again, so this war has increased pro NATO sentiment 10-fold among these countries, to the point where even neutral sweden and finland are playing with the idea of joining the alliance.
also, in central and western europe, a lot of the anti-EU right wing politicians used to be russia supporters. this is now biting them in the ass really hard - previously, all of russias shenanigans were relatively easy to explain or dismiss with simple "nato bad!" arguments, but now we're looking at russia starting a major land war in europe, one that is on track to massively overshadow what happened in yugoslavia 30 years ago. this is no longer defensible, so these politicians are now in a situation where they either have to completely abandon their pro russia position (which severely hurts their credibility) or stick with it and alienate a big portion of their supporter bas (which severely hurts their political prospects)

in my opinion nato supporting independence of slovenia and croatia was the right call
but they should have let the serbs and croats divide bosnia in between them, and let serbia remove the albanians from kosovo. as far as i know, most of the albanian population of kosovo exists as a result of titos immigration policies, which were created as an attempt to reduce serbian power over yugoslav state.
