President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

And I still have no idea what atrocities were actually at the hands of Germans, because most of what I know is from Russian history books where they suck off commie dick.
This self-hating slav is white-washing the atrocities of the Gërmans in a fit of self-loathing rage. His ire is an astro galactic megalul, propelling him to read Rüssian history books while going blind from rage. Now he can't read anything else, doomed to be buried with an intricate knowledge of commie dick.

I would bet my life it wouldn't even get this far, not even close, prices will just rise somewhat, point is if things get worse there are many many measures we can put into place to prevent mass starvation.
In a way you are (betting your life).

I do agree though, I don't see this happening in wheat rich America, or Western EU. I see people paying more, and maybe an overall benefit of people losing weight.

But in India, where on average an Indian pays 3.5% of his/ her daily income for a plate of food - (as compared to 0.6% in the US). Things will only get worse.

I don't have a crystal ball to see how that pans out with Modi and his anti-muslin policies. Genocide? Famine? Donno.

That's not counting on the political considerations. The turk has been high on his own farts the last couple of years, rambling on about the blitz spirit and setting himself up as a modern-day churchill. I wouldn't put it past him to enact some form of rationing as a sociopolitical nudge to get people concentrating on something other than his constant games of foot-gun. ANd if Labour get in, they'd use the current events and the climate change crap to do the same.

I won't lie I'm tired of going on the internet and seeing comments going "Globohomo guys!!!!!, don't trust them. Russia isn't that bad" after seeing slaughter of innocents.
Remember when they had that talking point of "Russian casualties are high and they can't take X city because they're extra careful about avoiding civilian casualties :( such based liberators"

Russia accuses YouTube of ‘fake news’, bans Google ads

Russia’s state communications watchdog said Thursday it would ban US internet giant Google from advertising its services in the country, accusing YouTube of spreading “fake news” about its military campaign in Ukraine.

Russia has moved to block access to non-state media and information resources and fears are mounting that Google could be next in line for a ban.

The watchdog said Google-owned YouTube had committed “numerous violations” of Russian legislation and was “one of the key platforms, distributing fake news about the course of the special military operation in Ukraine, discrediting the armed forces of Russia”.

It said it had decided to “introduce measures of coercion”.

It said these included “a ban on distribution of advertising for Google LLC and its information resources”.

It also said it would inform people using Google search engines of its breaches of legislation, without giving details.

The watchdog has already limited access to Google News app and website and accused Google of being “anti-Russian”.

After President Vladimir Putin sent troops to Ukraine on February 24 Russia passed legislation making it a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison to disseminate “false” information about its troops.

It accused YouTube of not tackling information resources of Ukrainian far-right organisations including the controversial nationalist Azov battalion fighting in Mariupol, saying it has not deleted more than 12,000 pages declared extremist by Russia.

It also reiterated complaints that Google has blocked state-owned media such as RT and Sputnik and other Russian media sites.

They still think Russian soldiers are "based straight men" despite evidence showing a ton of recruits get ass rape by high commanding officers.

If I was google, I'd reply with "Cope, seethe, dilate", but then I'd also be a tranny, and this is not the sort of stuff they say
It's satisfying to see Russian government grovel when they're trying to silence someone out of their reach. Very much so.

Cruel joke, that
Man, all farmers need to do is just turn on RT whenever Putin's lips start moving and they'll be set for weeks from a single speech.
Publicly threatened a a neighbor becuase they want to join NATO. How anyone thinks Russia are the "good guys" here is beyond me.
I'm sure the Finns are positively quaking in their skis given the current overwhelming might of the Russian military.

Yep. Absolutely terrified.

The ricochet from the foot salvo also seemingly kneecapped China somewhat, it's important to remember that a lot of fertile Ukrainian farmland and farming equipment that's now a bunch of craters and scrap was essentially leased or owned by the Chinese who seem to have panicked a little and are dumping soil over highways in order to turn that into farmland.

I believe that it started as preparation for war with the US and it’s allies.

Swiss have frozen $8 billion in assets under Russia sanctions

ZURICH, April 7 (Reuters) - Switzerland has so far frozen some 7.5 billion Swiss francs ($8.03 billion) in funds and assets under sanctions against Russians to punish Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, government official Erwin Bollinger said on Thursday.
The assets included money in frozen bank accounts and properties in four Swiss cantons, Bollinger told a news conference in Bern. He did not name the cantons.
In a sharp deviation from the country's traditional neutrality, Switzerland on Feb. 28 adopted European Union sanctions against Russians involved in Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. It is adopting other EU sanctions as well.
Currently, around 7.5 billion Swiss francs are blocked on the basis of the sanctions against Russia," said Bollinger, a senior official at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) agency overseeing sanctions.
Thursday's report marked an increase from an update two weeks ago, when Bollinger said Switzerland has frozen around 5.75 billion Swiss francs worth of Russian assets.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy last month heaped pressure on Switzerland -- a popular destination for Moscow's elite and a holding place for Russian wealth -- to more quickly identify and freeze assets of hundreds of sanctioned Russians.
Bollinger said Swiss officials met Ukrainian government representatives on Wednesday to discuss implementation of the sanctions, but he gave no details.
He referred to an estimate by the Swiss Bankers Association of 150-200 billion francs worth of overall Russian wealth in Swiss banks.

"Not every Russian person is sanctioned," Bollinger added. "At present, there are just under 900 people."

"As you can imagine it is often very complex to determine the effective control (of assets). Funds are thus in part blocked provisionally by banks. The amounts reported are only a snapshot," he added.
"The tendency is to block more than would be necessary."

Have you considered that maybe they were lying before, and now they're having to move a little closer to the truth? The real lesson you should take from this is that the media never gives you the truth and always lies about something. They're incapable of anything else.
