Ukraine will not take back the Crimea region. I doubt Putin had any other plans beyond the Eastern 2 regions to annex in addition to the Crimea (previous). The "acceptable" defeat of retreating to the East and holding it is the inevitable move allowing Putin to declare victory over the oppressed regions.

However, his war crimes and poor PR on the war will not see a roll-back of sanctions even when his forces are entirely absent from Ukraine save for the 2 regions and the Crimea. Putin didn't do it quick enough.

He has already lost the long-term game, the taking of a few regions will not compensate his country for the staggering cost economically they will endure.
