NeoGAF & ResetERA - The Hilarious N̶e̶v̶e̶r̶e̶n̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ Splintering "Gaming" Forum Circus

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
What the fuck does that even mean?
People have been disappointed in the past of games looking much worse in their final state than when they were shown during game expo's.
This trend still persists as strongly as ever but you are not allowed to voice that disappointment anymore as it's now toxic. The chorus of mods seems to agree with Eden making the statement Ex Cathedra meaning you're going to eat a ban if you say "Companies aren't your friends guys, in the end their lies are going to hurt their own bottom line when nobody considers that crap as representative."

so I keep seeing people talk about the puddle bullshit in spiderman as an overblown example of gamers being mad and I had no idea wtf they were talking about until someone posted an image

and that actually does seem to be a pretty major downgrade

The lighting is completely flat, even on spiderman's suit. What a mess.

yea its very obviously a change in the lighting and im not sure why they keep using "oh no they changed the puddle locations" as a gotcha. people loved that game, i watched my kid play it and it was really cool but this was clearly a situation where they demoed something that was different from the final release. why the need to defend a massive company when they fuck up? I guess resetera, as a forum, has a very pressing desire to ingratiate developers and journalists because they see themselves as the mouthpiece of the gaming world and want the industry to include them.

they also keep posting about death threats and harassment without actually providing any examples of that happening

Crossing Eden is an Ubisoft shill, he's probably still coping and seething about the criticism of Watch Dogs downgrade.

The burden isn't on them to prove any of this happened, it's on you to prove it's impossible for it to have happened.

It's pretty blatant false advertising which is not uncommon in videogames. Tech eggheads would call the E3 demo a "vertical slice" in order to run cover for developers putting on this charade. "It's just a demo, not fully representative", yada yada. It's really an easy fix if game companies didn't want to be called out for this practice by gamers: just stop setting impossible standards that the final game can't meet.

The problem is that this charade is by design. The gaming industry is very calculating in the way that it uses faked pre-release media to drum up hype. After all, as long as the final game looks mostly the same on Joe Sixpack's TV and is reasonably fun, who will care if they lie a little? It's a balancing act though, with problems arising when the pre-release vertical slice is too lofty a target for the developer to even vaguely hit. Then you get a Cyberpunk. The industry has had a lot of these disappointments in the last few years, to the point where "shitty over-hyped product not delivering" is firmly embedded in the gaming cultural zeitgeist. Is a missing puddle equivalent to Cyberpunk? Of course not, but people are now seeing the pattern of over-promising.

I think i'd give a lot of credit to a Youtuber called Crowbcat, who is probably the most eminent person(s?) shining a spotlight on these industry lies. Putting aside all the Afrocentrist butthurt over him making a "we wuz kangz" joke in an old Assassin's Creed Origins video, Era is likely the most astroturfed gaming forum on the net. Shills abound, either paid or retarded enough to do it free, and naturally they hate Crowbcat's guts for pointing it all out. Here's a thread about Gears 5 that didn't get past the first page before utterly derailing with a lot of nondescript outrage being aimed at his 'negativity':

Wait its this? Thought it was this? Which caused IShowSpeed to get fucking permanently banned from ALL Riot Games because of ‘misogynistic comments’.
So this is the clip a bunch of retards are freaking out about? Oh no, some guy raging at a video game. Never seen that before. People are so fucking sheltered man.

Been in many a Cracker Barrel in my day, and they're just as welcoming to big fat black families as they are big fat white families.
They suspect every white locale of having an undercurrent of brutality because their own communities are brutal, and they can't fathom that other races live differently than they do.

The reality is, the small town America that Stephen King hates with all his cold, sex-pervert heart is the exact kind of idyllic but boring paradise that it seems to be from the outside. There's no hidden darkness buried in the small-town American psyche, just a desire to be left alone and not have to deal with freaks.

I personally find these "downgrades" pretty lame but bait and switch in advertising is pretty normal. Movies often do it in previews by including entire scenes that never make it into the film or were filmed for the trailer.
