I'd say that's pretty spot-on. I think he had an "It's looks good on paper" plan that relied on a blitz to take Kyiv and leave the Ukrainian military in chaos. But he never really looked to see if it was actually achievable.Putin isn't actually a retard. He may be the highest-IQ current world leader. His mistake appears to be surrounding himself in a bubble that reinforces all his dumbest ideas. People can be functionally stupid while being actually intelligent.
I kinda get the feeling that he was constantly asking his generals and advisors questions like "Are our troops and equipment ready for an invasion?", "Can our supply lines keep running smoothly?" and "Those Chechens are excellent Marksmen, right?"
And everyone around him replied with "Yes, absolutely" except the Chechen General who replied with "Yeah...but send them a lot of extra ammo, just in case."
He probably never looked into it himself or he would've seen the outdated, poorly maintained vehicles, the troops taking bribes and playing 'Sodomize the new guy' instead of training, and a logistics system that was completely ineffective.
He believed his own hype men.
