President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Of course it’s gone. You knew that from the moment the official Russian source said they had evacuated the entire crew. And as soon as they said that there was only ever going to be two possible outcomes. It sinks on its own. Or Russia scuttles it. Because it would be far more damaging to Putin for pictures of Russia’s hopelessly mauled flagship being towed into Sevastopol. And having it sitting there as a smoldering hulk. An empty canoe. Regardless there is no good way for Russia to spin this. I’m sure Putin will attempt to go all “Remember the Maine!!!” In rallying his people. But it still makes the Russian Military look like a clown show.

Probably the biggest winner in this is Taiwan. Because now the People’s Liberation Navy is looking at the disaster in Ukraine the same way the Army is, and noting just how fucked they would be.

So the situation is so bad the motherfucking Russians are forced to admit that yes, the fucking ship sunk. That's a huge win for Ukraine, from propaganda to militarily. Imagine losing the fleet's flagship that bears the name of your capital, to your enemy that currently doesn't even have any naval force. And that's not counting the huge AA and artillery capacity they just lost

Russia is fucked, there's no spinning that can deny that now

'Russia redeploys Moskova as submarine in strategic move to create "Undefeatable submerged fortress near Crimea" says Putin.'
"The ship did not sink, it was sent on a special underwater operation to denazify Ukrainian fish"

I imagine the Russians just recovered as many missiles as they could off the floating hulk and just said 'fuck this thing, we don't need it rusting in port.'
Possibly, although given they can't replace it (even if they capture the unfinished hull the Ukies still have lying around) I'm not so sure. Regardless of whether or not the ship sinks they already look like mongs, at least if they'd kept the thing afloat they'd look marginally less retarded, plus then they'd at least have the theoretical option to return it to service at some point.

They need to tugboat the Admiral Kuznetsov there next. It should make it, the huge black clouds of inky smoke it creates under power will keep it disguised.

Please, please Lord let the Russians be stupid enough to send Kuznetzov into the fight (IDK if it's actually capable of operating under its own power after almost sinking at port, though). God it'd be great to see that ship take one cruise missile after the other, burn down to the waterline, and then sink.
Unsurprisingly given they sank the dry dock it was in, then set it on fire, then couldn't get the replacement dock ready on time, the Kutnetsov isn't capable of operations right now (not that it ever really is tbh). It's not scheduled to re-enter the fleet until next year some time, and if you combine regular Russian incompetence/delays with every thing going on with Ukraine right now I honestly wouldn't be surprised if she wasn't back til 2025 or so.

I don’t think the Kuznetsov is capable of movement at the moment. The last thing heard about it the Russian’s reported that it would be in refit until at least next year. They also claim to have fixed the big plumes of black smoke that it spewed out. I took that last bit to mean that it has probably simply sunk on it’s own.

They claim a lot of things. Funny how they're never demonstrated. They try to, and then their fighter jet just crashes at the Paris Airshow again.

Is Not just Russian’s!!! US Navy Warship is sinkink too!!!

Bah! Embedded Playback disabled. The Museum Ship the USS The Sulivan’s, a WW2 era destroyer named for 5 brothers that lost their lives while serving on the same ship, the USS Juneau, when it was sunk off Guadalcanal in 1942. The museum ship has sprung a major leak and is listing in its dock. There is a more modern Arleigh Burke class ship of the same name, that is just fine.

Russia says Ukrainian helicopters carried out strikes on its territory: https://www.rt.com/russia/553872-ukrainian-helicopters-attack-russia/

The second Chechen war was launched by a very dubious false flag like incident, so the FSB have form.
This is old news, but its good to see Russia admit it beyond "LOL Ukrop propaganda! Anyways these 6 fuel tanks experienced a mechanical error and caught fire in completely unrelated news..."

They either don't know or don't care. It seems that the boomer class of Russia is willing to have the country die with them.
Hahaha glad we don't have that here in the west, right...
right...?

I'm personally praying for a Ukie shoot-down of an Su-57 "Felon" myself.

Mega infinite bonus points if shot down by a Ukie 4th Gen Flanker or Fulcrum.

I think the most hilarious thing about the Kuznetsov, is when it suffered a massive almost uncontrolable Engine room Fire during it’s refit, it put out less thick black noxious smoke than the engines spew in normal operation.

It gets better. A Russian article about the Neptune, and another comment about it:

so the spin ... heheh ... too bad didn't screenshot news today, if I see someone posting shots, I'll add them here, but as of this morning the narrative was "nah, it's fine, is old ship, we wanted to scrap it anyway"

Another russian rag writes interviewing of some sailors who served on the ship:

Everyone smoked everywhere, drank (booze), naturally all kinds of things happened!

When I served, it was the biggest ship and was distinct in armor and equipment. I think that no one is 100% insured from fire.

These ships were made for 20 year use, and Moscow has been in service for 40, so I am not surprised.

New generation of sailors is less responsible. Small fires happened a lot, but were quickly extinguished, everything was up to high standards.

I don't know, I just have this image of a gopnik ship with a bunch of admirals in adidas tracksuits squatting on deck.

I doubt an SU-57 is in that theatre. It's nearly vaporware. The sanctions of 2014 are derided but it caused major problems with building these alleged super weapons like the T-14 parade tank and SU-57 Unicorn.

The attack was supposedly on the village of Klimovo on Thursday plus a missile strike on an airbase.

Putin's new Moskva submarine (Daily Mail)

Russia now even admits it sunk, during towing, with deaths (may they RIP) and it was the work of a Ukrainian designed missile, the Neptune derived from the KH-35

even the Russian propagandists admit it (Russia Today)

They do now say there was a storm as Ukies said. Admitting a Ukrainian missile sunk them might be going too far for them.

Of all the brain-dead takes.

"Hey guys, I know this country has been invaded by Russia in a completely unprovoked manner - but actually, by resisting Ukraine is killing civilians too, and if we help them maybe the after effects of the proliferation of weapons could be bad."

Yeah war is bad, being invaded by Russia and having an entire population persecuted and murdered until they submit to being Russian is worse. Get a clue. What are Ukrainians suppose to do? Oh sorry, we would fight back but that means people might inadvertently get hurt. Just concede all wars to people more ruthless than you and see how history turns out...

Russia has repeatedly outlined what the actual provocations were for years.

I will summarize, but these provocations were outlined since fall of USSR. "Remember Cuba? We don't want your missiles on our borders, either. Just like you didn't want a nation on your doorstep to house our missile systems, we don't want a nation on our doorstep to house your missile systems. If you do that, we will invade like you did in Cuba, but better. Oh look, we invaded like you did, but better. Why are you acting all surprised, this is silly."

You can disagree with Russia, most of world does. But it's not like they didn't warn NATO about the provocations (in their eyes, if not yours) for decades.

The replies are funny. Many suggest doing a wellness on him. He 's on a blocking frenzy. I wonder how they'll deal with it. The bitch will likely delete the Tweet.

Someone archived the RT admission so I wonder will they admit the Luch design bureau and the god of the sea gave the Black Sea a new diving attraction. I wonder will the Ukrainians try float it.
His tweets are now protected. More Armchair Bitch lol
