This is a big reason why certain studies found that >90% of children on puberty blockers went onto cross-sex hormones. There are a few interpretations, and the trans lobby goes with, "That means we picked kids who really were trans, so puberty blockers helped them." The other option is that you're freezing kids in the moment where they want to transition, and they are not even being given a chance to "grow out of it," as they might actually need. The rates of deciding not to transition after initially considering it are much higher for people who don't try to stop puberty. In the Keira Bell case, the judges seemed to think it beggared belief that puberty blockers would have that high of an "accuracy" rate; it is more likely that kids on puberty blockers were being pressured to transition or that it wasn't meaningful as a "pause" button since virtually no one opted out. And clearly some have since come to regret it now that they're older, so they are getting "false positives," but puberty blockers seem to lock them in early before they have a chance to realize this isn't actually helpful for them.
