I don't have an opinion on all this, but Ukraine and Belarus are massive countries, and Moldova, Georgia, Estonia, Latvia and and/or Lithuania would be next on Russia's radar for an invasion is my guess.

Joining NATO is an instant threat to Russia and will cause Russia to invade for these buffer countries. But Russia may invade for other reasons including economic and/or abuses of ethnic Russians.

I think the best solution is for these buffer countries to form their own alliance. Say Buffer Russian European Treaty Organization. B.R.E.T.O. in a mutual defense pack. Make sure that ethnic Russians are not abused, in fact they should make sure that ethnic Russians far prefer their current country's rule over Putin's rule. They also need to say to Russia, hey you want good relations? Make us better deals than the west instead of constantly threatening & invading us.
