"at least I'm back in the UK now, I'm not going to be terrified of a $3000 hospital bill bill" - Shut the fuck up Jim, people can see what your financial situation is like, you're not afraid of that regardless because it's a drop in the pond vs what you make per month
For fuck's sake, this little jab of his made me MATI for the exact reasons you described. This fat faggot spends years outside the UK making genuine top-level income from faux-journalism and podcasting, then when he gets COVID he's back in the UK and I'm the fucker paying for his treatment via the NHS! This is the exact shit a socialist would rail against, can't he see his hypocrisy or does he just not care? (My money is on the latter)

That's pretty interesting, I'd heard of company cars before and I know employers will often comp travel/accommodation if they're sending you to a conference or something, but Jim's suggestion everyone should get paid for the daily commute into the office is retarded, and would be a logistical nightmare because not everyone travels the same distance so you're gonna end up with some employees getting paid way more just because they live further away, rather than everyone being paid the same for the set hours they're actually at work doing their job.

I don't know that I'd even give Jim that much credit. I think he bitches about the games industry because it's the only type of work he has even tangential knowledge about since he hasn't held a real job for over a decade. The games industry does seem like a pretty shitty industry to work in, from an outsider's perspective, but that's why I wouldn't wanna work there. They're not chained to their desks, if it sucks so bad and nothing's changing go work somewhere else.
The idea that you'd be paid for commuting to work is completely unworkable, you're right. So far the company car has actually been the best way of dealing with it, as it's something you can use day to day for anything that will be completely looked after by the leasing/fleet hire company in terms of servicing, saving money on wear and tear on your own motor.

But of course you can't just give people a car in the socialist utopia, car bad

AFAIK some countries do require or encourage businesses to give their employees a fuel/public transportation allowance.

I don't know of any place paying for the time spent commuting, though. If the commute is killing you, find another job.
Yeah I've heard of fuel/fare allowances before, and I think those are fair incentives, but the logistics of comping commuting as a whole is laughable; for the first time in history people would be tuning in to traffic reports specifically so they could go get stuck in them.

I can see now why Jim rarely offers actual suggestions to the shit he bitches about non-stop, his ideas aren't even high school-level naive. He makes Patrick 'expert in everything' Tomlinson look like a fucking savant.

I hope to God that Jim Sterling responds to this in his next Jimquisition

It will just be some vague "well seems I upset The Gamers with my Elden Ring video, which proves I'm right" line. For all his posturing and sassy tweets he's a complete bitch and won't debate anyone outside his Twitter hugbox, even on just gaming topics. Only time I can recall him dealing with someone who had a differing opinion was Digital Homicide, but then he actually had the moral high ground, and unlike the person on the other end was used to speaking to an audience, so could easily run rings around him.

I watched the video and there’s some glaring lack of foresight from Jim - If game developers all work from home how would this not eventually lead to game companies just hiring people from poorer countries who would work for less and never instigate any me too sort of drama?

That seems the logical conclusion if game developers are all greedy and don’t care about anything but profits like he’s always going on about.
If Jim had the foresight, then he wouldn't have 600+ pages of this thread devoted to him.

This is what makes me really fucking angry that he's back in the UK - people like you and I are paying for him to get free medical treatment. I can't speak for yourself but I don't think I earn enough to pay for a rich fucker to get free treatment when he's never paid anything towards it. I like the NHS system and would never want to lose it but if you're earning as much as Jim does, yet not paying into it, then fuck right off and go private! Let the less fortunate benefit from it.

You don't chip in for something, you don't get to join in with that something. I am fucking baffled as to why successive governments haven't gotten their heads around that yet.
The NHS is cool and a good idea, blah blah I agree, but recently whenever anyone mentions the NHS I think "What NHS?". If you aren't going to actually die on the spot, and sometimes even if you are, you can't get an ambulance for literal hours. I have family members waiting on treatments that they've been told they have to wait even longer for or may just not even get at all because of covid and the backlog the restrictions exacerbated.
As far as I can see, coupled with the tax rises and general living cost hikes, we're all paying a lot more and getting a lot less for our apparently world-beating better-than-the-alternative magical free healthcare system. At the risk of getting a bit MATI, seeing people like Jim both not paying for AND STILL bitching about the NHS really boils my piss.

Working from home is also poison for any sort of worker coordination, including things like unionization, but also in the tech space, breaking off and starting their own company. There is a supreme irony to e-communists like Jim, who betray that they have never actually been in an actual job before. They sit impotently whining about how these corporations they consume from should do better, but they have exactly 0 understanding of anything workers can do to help themselves. Part of what makes Jim's capitalist critique so stupid and toothless is he remains slavishly devoted to the system and it products, he just uses his moral outrage as a papal indulgence to absolve himself personally of the sins of the system. It's easy to bitch and moan about revolution when you have no stake in anything apart from sitting on your fat ass and playing videogames for your audience of simps.

Keeping people working from home is actually super great for any sector feeling pressure from staff for things like wage increases or better working conditions, which, given current hiring issues, is a big thing for a lot of companies right now. People who get together talk, they compare notes, they realize if one person is being offered a better deal. Much easier to keep a lid on that when everybody is in their own little isolated COVID cell. They become even more dependent on work and the corporate structure as their only means of socialization and support.

Getting political and a bit off topic but it’s great for some things like emergencies like heart attack or stroke and the immediate aftercare (The surgeons work both privately and on the NHS so going private just gets you seen quicker and better hospital rooms) but kind of sucks for a lot of other things like just seeing a GP in reasonable timeframe these days, I’ve heard of a lot of people going private to get a diagnoses and then back to NHS just to skip the backlog.

I imagine Jim will get frustrated if he tries to get troon hormones or ADHD medication or anything like that.

I think it depends on the area you live in, too - I collapsed at a party and my friends got me an ambulance within minutes. Last time I went to A&E I was seen to and sorted within 45 minutes (including x-rays and 2 physical examinations). I do hear horror stories about people waiting for ages, but I've been lucky (I live in the North East).
