How do you know the method through which he obtained Chilean citizenship? His parents were Chilean citizens, he has a right to Chilean citizenship no matter where he was born. His whole family is from there, he was partly educated in Chile, he lived there as an adult, he even published his first novel and made a film there. I’m fairly certain he’s Chilean and not “some immigrant.” He a first-generation immigrant to the United States, not Chile.

From what i know, he left the country after the critics trashed his movie (which it's the reason why it never got a release after the initial theatrical run), before that he used to have puff pieces written about him and how successful he was as a writer in the US.
I seem to remember that in the week before that Daily Beast article was published CRP was basically bragging on Twitter that they were doing a piece on him. Only after he got the first batch of questions from them requesting comment did he turn on them and claim they were working on a hit piece. He still bragged about it until after it came out until someone else pointed out that they "could get you killed!" that he adopted that victim narrative to grift.
