Westminster College, a private institution in Salt Lake City, is facing backlash over a porn course being offered this year.

Hardcore pornography is as American as apple pie and more popular than Sunday night football,” the course description reads.

The class is listed as one of the film courses available at the school where students will analyze “this billion-dollar industry is as both a cultural phenomenon that reflects and reinforces sexual inequalities,” according to the course’s description.

Students can expect to watch pornographic films in class, according to the college, and “discuss the sexualization of race, class, and gender and as an experimental, radical art form.”

The instructor of the course, Eileen Chanza Torres, told ABC4 that the course is meant to be critical of pornography and not for her students to “watch porn, giggle and go home.”

Westminster College occasionally offers elective courses like this as an opportunity to analyze social issues. As part of this analysis, Westminster College and universities across the county often examine potentially offensive topics like pornography to further understand their pervasiveness and impact,” the school said in a statement to KSL TV. “Descriptions of these courses, while alarming to some readers, help students decide if they wish to engage in serious investigation of controversial subjects.”

Westminster College did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News on April 21.

The course is an elective, meaning that students do not have to take the class, according to the university.

A petition to remove the class has been signed by more than 450 people as of April 21.

The petition claims that “these are not Utah values” and that this “creates an unsafe environment for students and faculty and normalizes pornography in culture.”

>our approach to this billion-dollar industry is as both a cultural phenomenon that reflects and reinforces sexual inequalities (but holds the potential to challenge sexual and gender norms)

They created a class on watching two people fuck and somehow managed to make it about trannies.

I'm beginning to see some real merit to the argument that people who get off to watching a guy rail a girl they're attracted to are essentially introductory level cucks.

Yeah, the course header lures you in, but if you read the rest of the course description, I can basically guarantee you're going to be in for a miserable semester.

Critical feminist appraisals of porn are good for a quick, cheap laugh, but if you have to write papers on the subject, you're doing it wrong. Audit, or avoid.

Came for the adult films, get stuck with a 1500 word essay analyzing moans and another with 5000 words on why stepmoms or siblings getting trapped in everyday objects are a philosophical metaphor about life.

My university had a "Intro to Human Sexuality" 200-level psych course that I constantly heard about from dudebros signing up for as an elective. Curiously I never heard anything good about it from people who actually took it.

"Imagine having to watch hardcore pornography with your professors"

Especially when your professor looks like this:

Okay first of all just, wow, imagine the smell... Moving on, first fun fact is this person with the scary lighting is Eileen Chanza Torres. That's right this isn't just the long-hair coomer film enthusiast look, it's a damn troon. Finally womp, womp, someone's Staff page is throwing up a 404. Thanks archive frens!

Bants out of the way I have to just say poor showing all around. You certainly could approach this with an academic bent but I think the 404 speaks for itself that this ain't it chief. Maybe if you were born female you could get a pass, even looking like that. Even without taking AGP issues into account they've already demonstrated they've got enough confusion and mental fuckery going on. Interesting case study? Maybe. Good instructor/authority on the topic? No chance.

Who would be a good instructor/authority on this topic anyway? A retired porn star with a Ph.D.?

Well outside of very niche topics like teledildonics, you're not really going to find many big thinkers in the field. What exist isn't worth dignifying with a reference/citation. If I had to include lecturing from industry insiders I would either go for one of the career-couples with a long filmography or preferably retired. That way even if it is a somewhat warped view on relationships the students get a first-hand account of how it doesn't work. I'd keep their perspective from getting too rose-tinted I'd find many examples like this: (1:07 timestamp)
Unfortunately even Eileen up there is one of the more-reputable people in the field. In that they are an academic and Google did not have a thousand skeletons to throw out of the closet. The silver lining is for anyone autistic enough to study this and disciplined enough to stop whackin' it, the world is their oyster. I can think of a few topics for capstone-level statistics and analysis work. Dress it up right, emphasize the non-existent budget needed if data sources pass ERB, and I am fairly confident I could be off to the races with a liberal arts school's sponsorship. If you don't want to be immediately dismissed pretty much all of the course description should be citations of published work to make it clear you have something valuable to say on the topic.

My kingdom for a horrifying rating.

I mean it can't be more than a week or two's worth of material unless we doing a deep delve on the history of porn. Like going back to stag films and even earlier.

Nigga they gonna bring up Dream of the Fisherman's Wife?
Japan has been overrun with weird-ass porn for over a thousand years except for a bit of the 18th century when there was marginally less because all ukiyo-e needed stamps from official censors.

One local art museum has a collection of Japanese art that rivals big museums in Tokyo - stuff like ceramics by Rosanjin - and a vast majority of their pieces can't go on general display because it's mostly porn. Thousands of woodcut prints of samurai buggering their page boys with dicks bigger than their legs and whatever else. The Fisherman's wife is pretty much par for the course.

I'm not surprised about this at all

Shit I remember reading something about this happening back in the early 2000s

Also enrollment in that class must be shit, it seems to be a joint course between the FILM, GNDR, and LMW departments. They need to offer it as part of three different departments to get enough enrollment to justify running the course.
That's not super uncommon in topics courses. When I was in college I took an elective course on the Troubles and it was offered through the religious studies, Catholic studies, and Irish studies departments. If I remember right, it was at or near full enrollment.

Some high level art class seriously studying pornography and watching parts of porn movies or full porn movies every once in a while fine

Watch one LegalPorno tranny piss gangbang scene every class then talk about oppression is not serious study

Academia has been infested with losers who never got laid in high school and are now obsessed with sex because of it.

I've personally found some people who've completed degrees to have a bit of a chip on their shoulder. They think their piece of paper instilled some IQ boost of 50 points or something. Later on I discover in actuality, their private lives are a complete shitshow compared to the professional image they put forth.

Nobody has to take this class

These are adults over the age of consent

It's not ar a religious institution

Porn is more popular than televised sports

It's not a how to be a whore class

I'm usually among the first to be morally outraged by liberalism but I really don't see anything wrong with this?

I wouldn't take it, but it's not even close to the mandatory "How not to rape" classes at some universities.
