Patrick Sean Tomlinson / @stealthygeek / "Torque Wheeler" / @RealAutomanic / Kempesh / Padawan v2.5 - "Conservative" sci-fi author with TDS, armed "drunk with anger management issues" and terminated parental rights, actual tough guy, obese, paid Quasi, paid thousands to be repeatedly unbanned from Twitter

Oh man, I don't know how long the mad lads over at OnA decided to add Mary Three Names to their list of targets, but kudos!

You thought they were salty over Tomlinson? Now they're going after someone they care about, there's angry, there's panic, and its wonderful.

Like I said... SFWA is fragile thing, surviving on reputation and a loyal core willing to mob for them. Take out their knees, reveal them to be feeble and living on past glory, and they will collapse.

Oh, and I certainly wouldn't want to wave this around ol' Three Names:

They've also taken swipes at "Aunt Jemima "(nk jemisin) and "that faggot with the ogress wife" (scalzi)

25,000 isn't exactly an impressive start to begin with, not for a book by the President of SFWA published by Tor, the largest spec fiction publisher on the planet, which employs some of the best marketing teams in publishing, with adoring media coverage to boot. Those are decent numbers only by the standards of your average Hugo nominee, who will barely prove able to sell a couple thousand copies.

Again, you guys really have no idea just how fragile the system SFWA has built for itself really is.
I went looking for youtube reviews to see if they could explain what about the book drove readers away, but they were all fawning, sycophantic praise. I wonder how the SFWA would react to honest reviews. Do they have a history of brigading youtube channels?

If I could buy those mad lads a beer, I would.

Do be sure to attack Jemison for how she nearly killed Isabel Fall, and settled for killing her career and forcing her back in the closet. Get the trannies in on this.

Give 'em hell.

Access journalism at its finest. Plus, plenty of people wanting to kiss Mary Three Names ass because she was running SFWA and had Worldcon in a vicegrip.

As for how they take criticism, ask the Sad Puppies, or the folks at Upstream Reviews.

When did these filthy crab-pig-hybrids take over science fiction? I remember enjoying this stuff when I was a kid and it was nothing like this.
Woah! Yikes! Big oof! You need to stay in your lane and lift up marginalized voices and check your space privilege and try to be a better ally!

I think a lot of publishers are getting influenced by Twitter and the social trends there. As younger people enter the industry they are swayed by social media and end up pushing these new authors. It’s a lot harder to get picked up by a publisher if you resemble the sci-fi authors of old. However, guys like Larry Correia give some hope that there is a market out there for older style sci-fi and fantasy regardless of what the Twitterati claim.

"Ye best start believin' in lolcows, child! You are one!"
The Pests vs The Pig is like an unstoppable force meeting and immovable object. They'll never stop trolling him, he will ever stop responding.
If it ends like Laelaps, the dog who was destined to catch whatever he chased, versus the Teumessian Fox, who was destined to never be caught, it will end with Zeus resolving the paradox by turning both sides to stone and placing them in the stars as two new constellations: the Pests and the Pig.

Also, sci fi is generally the purview of nerds. Nerds are low status individuals, and Leftism is the politics of low status individuals, so it's a natural fit in this hyper politicized age

Look up Sad Puppies. The first battle of the modern culture war, and we lost.
Did we really? I had no idea the hugos were a modern day laughing stock until they changed the rules because they were afraid scalzi's butt buddies wouldn't win anymore. In fact, before the Puppies, I thought the hugo awards were dead and gone because the last time I'd seen them on a book was when I read Ender's Game in middle school.

Meanwhile DragonCon's first year doing awards saw ~4-5x the voters involved with the average hugo nominee backroom dealing, and have given awards to books I have actually read. Jim Butcher is finally getting the recognition he probably never actually cared about, since he regularly outsells hugo losers 10000 to 1.

Also, looking at the Dragon Awards, I see a distinct lack of Tor. Unlike the hugos, tor has only won once in each category in the last six years, and one of those wins was Brandon Sanderson so who can really be mad.

SciFi has been used as a soapbox for (mostly leftist) Utopian political thought since at least the beginning of the last century.
And as the mainstream of leftism in the West turned away from orthodox focuses (economic and the proletariat as a revolutionary force) towards what is broadly called Cultural Marxism (culture and marginalised groups as the revolutionary subject) so did all the other fields and niches heavily influenced by these ideas.
And since the pace of accelleration is ever increasing implicitly and explicitly leftist/deconstructionist etc fiction of yesterday becomes problematic and acceptable now means chocolate kween astronauts and transbian space marines.

For trad publishers - and I say this as someone who works for one - pretty much the only one who has stood firm against the tide has been Baen Books... and my god have the wokies repeatedly try to make them pay for that.

Good on you for supporting the Dragon Awards!

By win I mean that, had the Puppies won outright and the wokies lost, would this cancer have spread to every other branch of pop culture? Would Tor and Orbit and thier ilk kept thier heads down or remained mostly sane?

And yeah, guys like Larry Corriea and Jim Butcher weathered the backlash fine... lot of midlisters like Brad Torgersen didn't. To say nothing of all the newbie spec fiction authors being kept from success because they're too white/male/straight for the gatekeepers.

Ten years ago, I my bosses never would have openly told me to reject an author because he was a white guy, or sent promising authors packing because they didn't want to make every other character gay.

I dunno if the Battle for the Hugos sped up a wokie takeover, or just made the leftie loons drop the mask, but I've watched the transformation first hand...

I wonder a lot if it might have been prevented ir mitigated. I wonder a lot more if it can be fixed at this point.

It didn't help that much of the anger was hijacked by useless idiots like Vox Day.

Indeed, the Rabid Puppies were tools.

That and the Sad Puppies were totally unprepared for SFWA dropping that media blitz smearjob they did. I think the level of personal attacks and venom shocked a lot of people.

Yes, but only if by fixing you mean 'Baen laughing as everyone else goes bankrupt when the old guys propping them up die.'

Also I like that you mentioned Brad, he got a Dragon Award 2-3 years ago for a star-wheeled sky. Any idea how well that sold? I liked it and it was the first e-book I bought directly from Baen's website - which I was only made aware of because you mentioned it, amusingly.
