I don't think Nick's core audience supported him because of free speech. They supported him because he has a "far-right, tradcath, klansman." His core followers were former members of the alt-right who were disgruntled with Richard Spencer's leadership (aka optics) or Pagans in the movement.
The free speech angle is likely more important to center-right people who are more liberal on social issues.

I'm pretty sure if someone wanted to throw on a hood and join the Klan they'd have better avenues than this. Nick's audience were people with no path or initiative that saw him as some beacon of the the present hot topics at hand, a major one being free speech. I don't think there was any real following to Richard Spencer.
