Plagued Consoomers / Consoomer Culture - Because if it has a recogniseable brand on it, I’d buy it!

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.
I saw a phone commercial where you can exchange old phones for a new one and people were giving the guy the stink eye for carrying an old phone. I immediately thought of this thread.
Why don't any of these people seem to make coffee at home? They spend enough money in a month to invest in a really good machine for their kitchen.
You don't even need a machine, I found a metal strainer from an Asian place for $3. It's only enough to make a glass but that's enough for me.

Might be that they come in different flavors that are exclusive to Japan.
Basically the reason I splurge on a bag at the Asian supermarket once in a while, or import a few boxes. Most of the flavours are sickly sweet, but I'm a sweet tooth, and giving them to people who don't know about them and watching their fillings explode from the sugar content never gets old.

There's a lot of weebs who only like them because OMG Nippon though, and will pay out the ass for them at a con (props to the sellers tho, they're laughing to the bank)

There are alcoholic Japanese Kit Kats as well. I got one a sake one from a friend who went on a trip to Japan.

But it's like they are literally living in Japan dood! *Soyjack intensifies*

Edit because this is funny.
Blowing over 500 dollars a day but taking an Uber to dinner = too expensive and she got cat called... Everything for a flex, i guess....

Idk anything about how mass transit works in NYC, but I would think her company would be "big tech" enough to reimburse (partially or fully) for some sort of monthly or yearly commuter pass? Or maybe an allocated credit per month? Unless she does but just threw in the regular fare just cause. If she's really paying full fare out of pocket twice every day (minus this random uber moment) though...man there's like an extra $30-$40 wasted right there per month.

also $360 on returns what the hell are they buying

The good companies will pay for a monthly pass, hell I got one at an old job that wasn't even anything special or big tech. Based on the video itself and her hints, the "big tech" company is probably a social media farm, like Buzzfeed or College Humor type of place. They usually don't give their people functional perks like that, but they probably have a pool table in the lunch room.

Just going to sperg on the aesthetics thing for a minute.

The idea of different aesthetics and sub aesthetics doesn’t particularly bother me in and of itself. For example, say you have a teenage daughter who’s into the whole ‘dark academia’ thing. I could see this being a positive if she actually takes up good habits that come with said aesthetic like reading, crafting, giving vintage clothing new life, etc... Anything to get these zoomers interested in hobbies and being creative outside of TikTok is golden by me. That being said I feel that a lot of kids who get into these aesthetics do so just for the look of them and not the lifestyle that comes with it. (Mind you anyone who’s actively involved in subculture will tell you there’s a time and place for expressing your ‘aesthetic’, and you need not commit to a single one. Something teens have a hard time figuring out.) Another user mentioned the Lolita subculture, which is a good example, there are many different sub aesthetics (sweet, gothic, punk, to name a few), and these girls get really passionate about it. I just don’t see that same passion in the kids who are like ‘oh yeah I’m totally cottagecore’, when they can’t even sit through a novel or bake a muffin. I’m sure there are a few who are really invested, but they are few and far between.

But don’t you dare use the pool table on company time or you will get written up

You think I haven't seen a video for this? You think this didn't take me more than a literal minute to find?

Exactly.
I think personally it's more part of the consoomer "ideal" that you have to walk through NYC with a expensive meme drink in your hand just like a main character in a Netflix show would...
You too, got this one just for you:
Oh, and how about some background music for your day?

This is PlantTok. Some of them are batshit insane, but by and large most videos I'm seen in the genre lean towards "Interesting and Informative" rather than just "Consume and Collect"

I mentioned the main character syndrome half joking some time ago, but of course, is a real genre, played unironically because social media is beyond just regular cynicism
But don’t you dare use the pool table on company time or you will get written up
People in "fun" offices never make any money, they are traps for the recently graduated who will be easier to exploit. They are never very fun either, when an office has too many ammenities they are implicitly giving away that they are the type of job that expects you to live there and stay there working way after hours.

My son, you can have pijama tuesdays, a foosball table and a cheap pizza lunch once a month or a livable wage, choose wisely.

So I know we've briefly touched on Apple in this thread, and mentioning Apple is beating the deadest of all horses at this point, but I had no idea iPhones had gotten this bad. And people still buy them and defend the company.
Yeah they manage to get worse with every new iteration. If you pay attention to the Right to Repair movement, they aren't the only ones. It isn't profitable for consumers to refurbish and fix the stuff they buy (check out the Light Bulb conspiracy if you haven't, it's neat, and the first documented case of officially planned obsolescence). "They don't make it like they used to" isn't hyperbole.

I'm fully aware of right to repair and I support it whole heartedly. I knew that Apple was bad, but I had no idea it was that bad.

That PlantTok spiraled me into a rabbit hole. There’s a fine line between batshit and genius, as we all know.

The soulless trying to prove their existence through mild consumption changes and music taste.:story:
At least those in the videos were self aware enough to make fun of themselves. There is hope for them - those listening to the random song collections on youtube though...

I have a fondness for practical merchandise which is usable beyond degenerate consoomer desires. Recently, anime chess series, Fire Emblem, was visited by such merchandise which compliments a "tea time with my waifu/husbando" segment from the game. For the price of $38 USD (shipping not included), you too can dine like your fictional war criminal of choice.

If I recall correctly, the tea time segment existed to raise affection with that particular character accompanying you and therefore unlock new character conversations as well as provide beneficial boosts in battle due to your newfound companionship. Every playable character in Fire Emblem: Three Houses has a tea of preference, with some characters having similar interests while others are particular.

This tea set is a physical manifestation of the tea time feature's accoutrements, complete with the "same" 6oz ceramic tea cups and sample bags of tea formulations straight from the game. The matching tea pot featured in-game is not provided, which is unfortunate.

The tea included seems to be one of the favorites of the three house leaders from the game (character Edelgard). Earl Grey tea (Bergamot) called "Hresvelg Blend" here.

For an additional $38, you can also pick up this tea variety set which features all of the tea samplings for every playable Fire Emblem Theee Houses character. What would usually cost $14 on Amazon is now yours at double the price! But worry not, think of the dopamine you would feel seeing the name of the in-game universe name instead!

As I said, I have a fondness for practical merchandise like the mini refrigerator with that Call of Duty game another poster mentioned. Plastics, books, soundtracks, and vinyls do not convince me but usable cups and fragrant teas are healthier ways to enjoy media that isn't meaningless worship of brands. This is likely the healthiest drink any if these weebs will ever have.
