Agreed. Discussion groups that moderate like a dictatorship have been around since the dawn of internet. It's just that for many years, it was also fairly easy for dissatisfied users to just go somewhere else and set up a new group. That happened in pretty much every online community I've ever been a part of.

What makes these giant social media platforms so crappy is that even if you have enough interest and enough funds to support making a direct competitor to them, it's only a matter of time before some outside force jams a wrench into it somehow, including things like Visa and Mastercard just outright refusing to process payments for you. The problem isn't just Twitter/Facebook/whatever having bad moderation, it's also that there's no onus for them to ever have any better moderation because for some reason, nobody seems to be permitted to make an actual competitor to these sites. 🤔

I don't think it can be. As long as a platform is making money from advertisers or donations, it's going to have a target audience that it caters to and doesn't want to piss off. (Just like mainstream media news outlets, but for some reason, nobody ever seems to be able to understand this concept.)

They want money, and if they decide certain patron behavior is bad for their brand or public image, they're legally entitled to remove those patrons.

Notice that a lot of large protests regardless of political affiliation are held on public property; there's a reason for that. They know that the government has less control over what they say than a private business would.

I definitely don't agree with Twitter's moderation policies, which is why I don't use it. The lesson here is not to patronize businesses whose practices you disagree with.

There is plenty of reasons why businesses can have certain rules but not others. They can not choose to not serve certain people for example.
