Brianna Wu / John Walker Flynt - "Biggest Victim of Gamergate," Failed Game Developer, Failed Congressional Candidate

I guess what they need is billionaire philanthropist software engineer John Walker Flynt to swoop in with a hostile takeover to shake their shit up.

They should try more imaginative scams, like running a Super PAC that produces jack fucking shit for no one.

Okay I thought about it and I concluded that you're a gay man.

People think building webpages is easy money. Until they actually engage in it and find out what they have to deal with.

It's like all the horror stories of retail multiplied by people not even understanding what the product is that they're talking about, and every decision being made by a committee of commitees.

The thread about the "webpage", like it is 1989, is interesting beyond John's claim that he is a workaday Joe working hard for his money like the average working man.

People who understand the cost of such a project inject their expertise. John moves goalposts and keeps suggesting squarespace, which he uses for the Rebellion PAC site that has a definite "watched the first result for 'bootstrap tutorial' on jewtube" feel. John claims that his problem with the project is actually that locals should make it on squarespace because they know more about the place (because the content would not be determined by the town) and then that the town should be spending the money on schools instead. He refuses to accept that a tourism site is an investment, not some way for mom and pop shop to put their menu "on the computer". Eventually, he pulls out the "consider you a friend" line.

It is a classic John W. Flynt moment: runs his mouf on something he knows nothing about, gets corrected by people who do, and then John tries to win by default using identity and/or personal lived experiences.
This is the point where you swoop in and build them a website for free in four hours and save the day, isn't that right software engineer John Walker Flynt?

Typical pencil-[weener] wife-abusing homosexual.

Why does he keep bringing up squarespace? Does he own stock?
The squarespace site he "coded" in four hours though nothing was actually coded is terrible. He did not even spend the 2 minutes to make a javascript choice field for donations. He just listed the amounts as paragraph elements with empty classes.
I know I should not write this, but I am beginning to doubt that John is actually a software developer.
This isn't how government contracting works though. Maybe they could have just gone with Squarespace but they'd still have to issue a contract that Squarespace agreed to and included all kinds of terms that any random making a webpage doesn't have to. If this is a grant (as @KingDead indicates above) the terms on both issuing the contract AND receiving the grant are far far more stringent than that even. Not to mention that various laws may require them to solicit bids, include a certain number of minority providers, etc.
He also ignores accessibility. He did not even bother adding anything for blindos and "r-words" who use the rebellion site. That site really needs it. Who other than "r-words" would visit it?

It's flabbergasting that this incredible fucking moron delivers hot steaming turds of "ads" and then criticizes anyone else for their performance. Great job, John, squat and shit out grade school level garbage supposedly for $100,000.

Come on, John went the extra distance and got a horribly stereotypical black voiceover to appeal to black voters! He even referenced Charlamagne tha God! That's like running through a minefield for a white tranny kept housewife from Massachusetts.

ETA: Oops. My bad. I thought John was talking about a town in Mississippi, not Massachusetts. You may ignore the following post.

There's a reason John doesn't name the city or link to his source: He's lying about everything. And the story is from 2010.

The money wasn't local; it was a grant from the state and wouldn't be available for anything other than the tourism site. And John couldn't build the site if he spent the rest of his life working on it. The site, for example, allows visitors to book reservations at motels, hotels, RV parks, and so on.

From the city's newspaper:

"The Mississippi Heritage, History and Culture Tourism Fund sponsored the grant to Natchez through the tourism division of the Mississippi Development Authority."

Link.

I'm not sure how I feel about John's current "I consider you a friend" schtick
I mean, it's wayy funnier than the "with all due respect" he was using prior to it
but he's in that shitty valley of overuse somewhere between peppering it in and an actual catchphrase

I can't stand it. It's such a blatant way to shit on people while pretending he has moral superiority.

John, I consider you a friend, but you are not a woman.

I dug a little more, and John might be telling the truth about such a project, but getting the facts wrong either willfully or through ignorance. Possibly both.

The Massachusetts tourism department had a tourism recovery grant program set up for 2022, presumably to help bring tourists back to the state post-coof. Applications could be accepted for a variety of projects, including marketing, advertising, and yes, even website upgrades. As it happens, a level 2 grant for websites would give, you guessed it, $50,000 to that end. According to the timeline, grants should have been awarded last month, though it's possible things got delayed, government work being what it is.

With that in mind, I looked to see if I could find any news articles about a website grant, and found this news article from the city of Quincy about how they'd received $99,000 for a new visitor's guide, digital marketing, and lo and behold, an updated website. It's possible this is the one John's talking about, though I'll say that the article mentions 80 organizations in total received grants, so it could be any one of those.

That said, it's exactly the same situation as what was listed in your article: this is grant money that the town applied for and received, and can only be used for this purpose. Is it overkill? I don't know enough about web dev costs to say for sure, but I imagine that a decent-sized city like Quincy would get their money's worth. Maybe a "tiny town" wouldn't, but since John didn't name names, it's impossible to say. But it's not like they're charging their taxpayers directly for it (only indirectly through state taxes), and if it brings more tourists to the area, the costs will be more than made up for.

As always, John is a fucking retard.

What a bunch of bullshit coming from someone who claims to be a "software engineer," and only shows that he's never actually worked in the industry. $50k to hire developers to make a website is an absurd amount of money, but not if it's used for "investing" in pinball machines.

Also, if it's so cheap to create a website using tools like squarespace, why did it cost noted software expert Brianna Wu over $200,000 (or was it 400k?) to create a shit game using Unreal Engine? Would you say a site that might attract thousands of viewers is more valuable than a game that attracted tens of players, most of whom only wanted to create a funny youtube about it?

It got a little swept under the rug with the website talk, but I find it hilarious that Wu, who has been pretending to be an expert at running a super PAC and creating ads, just admitted they've never tried to buy ad space in a local newspaper and don't even understand the process. Okay, I'll be generous and assume the head of a PAC has someone else to do that kind of thing, but you should still at least be aware of the general process/effectiveness. Wonder what he needed the ad for anyway.

John, I consider you a friend, but you are not a woman.
well...I...never!!
Hell, almost everything John tweets is a blatant way to shit on people while pretending he has moral authority. It's what John does - that's the premise of his whole act.
So really we're left with mechanics and style
I think we really have to take a look at it from the comedy value - the "I consider you a friend line" is better from a comedy standpoint, it's more condescending, it's less true (with all due respect you can at least punt to...well, he's not due any respect),
not to mention it's pretty creepy which fits the bri bri physical character really well

Come on, John went the extra distance and got a horribly stereotypical black voiceover to appeal to black voters! He even referenced Charlamagne tha God! That's like running through a minefield for a white tranny kept housewife from Massachusetts.
Makes me wonder how much of Wu's authentic Mississippi jive-talk they had to cut or re-write. And what's up with the "photo missing" for Chontal? There's a profile pic on Wiki commons that can be used instead of the ladies loo sign, is this an attempt at a really dumb underhanded tactic to...

Wu definitely had a hand in making those videos judging by the drop-in effects. Why is there suddenly a bit of VHS static? Well the effect is right there and it is super easy to use.
