It seems to me this happens when they stay in the specific niche of (X) game mapping and never branch out into the industry to make a living for themselves. They end up unsatisfied and then double back on these hugboxes.

I think it's less about treading water hobby/career-wise, and more about such people simply not having any meaningful real life social interaction if any at all. Combine loneliness with twitter/discord and you get craziness.

It's a little bit of both, and also these guys thinking they deserve god status because they support a niche community with fresh content, even though anyone could replace them if they wanted to. When they don't get it, and they lack a social circle that doesn't have their same mentality, they lose it.

The more I browse this site the more I learn about how shitty communites can be, especially with Doom modding and shit. It's not that surprising though, since the shit with Doom reminds me a lot of the Source modding/mapping community or anything Half-Life related where the community is filled with troons and degenerates alike. I guess this is what happens when you dedicate your life to a game that is like 30 years old.
