Star Trek - Space: The Final Frontier

By comparison, here's the scene from TNG where we saw Picard's mother:

It didn't need to bring up any childhood traumas, or go into detail about how tragic her death was - everything that we need to know is provided by Stewart's acting (admittedly with a big assist from the music), and it is infinitely more moving.
Hard to believe she got that old if she hung herself.

Of course I'm mad at myself for not recognizing the continuity gaffe right away when it was a classic card.

Apparently someone on the production team did eventually realize they fucked up, as there's a hilariously awkward dubbed-in line from Picard about how he used to imagine his mother as an old woman offering him tea.

They literally showed her necking herself View attachment 3233143
I miss when writers and directors would respect the viewers and didn't to show thing in your face to make it sure that you got it.

I guess if that old version of his mother was all in his head, then Starfleet shouldn't have allowed him to be the captain of a starship.

I've just started season four of Voyager.

I'm going to get to the series finale and still be asking "when does it get good?", aren't I? This show is a death march. Every now and again I see a pretty tree or a sexy lady but most of the time it is a goddamn Jap hitting me in the spine with the butt of his rifle and telling me in Moon to keep marching.
I got up to the beginning of season 3 before just giving up from boredom. There's a lot of potential there, but jesus christ it's so god damn safe and uninteresting. It's not a show you want to follow on from DS9.
I still strongly recommend an episode guide for the viewer with low patience/low tolerance for bullshit, like the one on EAS. Voyager has good episodes here and there, but they are relatively few and far between, and the first few seasons are almost all trash. Don't skip The Thaw tho.

Also do not watch if you just watched DS9 recently, decompression sickness will set in. The best thing to watch Voyager from is TNG.

Say what you will about Archer, at least he actually cared about his crew.

If I had to pick which Trek Captain to follow, it would be between TOS Kirk or Archer. They're both actually leaders and the men under you can tell between a leader that will go to bat for you and share your danger, and a useless fucking diplomat or taskmaster.

Archer got his job because of nepotism. Janeway was incompetent evil, not mentally unstable.

I'm rating that excuse dumb, not you. I appreciate the report even if it does fuel my murder circuits.

Bitch, Sisko was on the front lines punching Jem'hadar out with his own fists!
And even he respected Kirk so the answers are Kirk & Sisko.

Sisko is too reckless, too likely to get you killed. I'm sticking with Kirk and Archer.
Too reckless? Archer flew his brand new ship right into the middle of a space-thunderstorm in the first episode. because of a "speech" his daddy gave him. Again - IN SPACE. You know what you can do in space? Go around!

"I'm reading an ion storm on that trajectory, sir. Should I go around it?"
"We can't be afraid of the wind, ensign. Take us to warp four."

- Travis Mayweather and Jonathan Archer, quoting Archer's father Henry

Which captain is overdone.

How about which medical officer would you want?

Archer had a brand new, never been done before ship. He had to see what it could happen, that's the whole purpose of an NX. Everyone aboard knew what they signed up for.

As for Jellico, he falls under the taskmaster group of leaders, at least from what little we got to see of him. While it was fun watching him impart some much needed discipline on the Enterprise crew, you really don't get much of a feel from him besides that he's a hard ass and regulations junkie.

And while I don't think Sisko is a bad Captain at all, for someone who's essentially a base CO, he takes way too many unnecessary chances.
